ISI MARK REGISTRATION IN INDIA
What is ISI Mark Registration? ISI mark is a certification mark for industrial products in India. The mark certifies that a product confirms to the Indian Standard, mentioned as IS:xxxx on top of the mark, developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India. The ISI mark is by far the most recognized certification mark in the Indian subcontinent. The name ISI is an abbreviation of Indian Standards Institute, the former name of the Bureau of Indian Standards. The ISI mark is mandatory for certifying products to be sold in India, like many of the electrical appliances. Procedure for ISI registration: • Submission of application form duly filled along with the required supporting documents and the application fee (Rs 1000) to the branch office of the region where the manufacturing unit is located. • The application is scrutinized along with all the supporting documents submitted by the applicant. The application gets accepted and a number is allotted which is conveyed to the applicant for any future correspondence. • A preliminary investigation is carried out by the BIS officer within 15 days of submission of the application. The scrutiny date is mutually agreed upon by both the applicant and the BIS officer. This scrutiny is of technical nature and aims at ascertaining the quality and capability of the product manufacturer. The officer evaluates the manufacturer’s testing and research facility and ascertains the competency of the personnel involved in the manufacture of the product. • The product samples are taken at random and tested in BIS approved labs as part of quality check. • The BIS charges additional fees for the random and independent testing of product and for the preliminary scrutiny visits to the manufacturing facility on a man-day basis. Currently this is fixed at 7000/- plus tax per day. • The BIS grants the license after a thorough scrutiny and after a set of regular visits and facility capability checks it conducts. The manufacturer can display the ISI mark logo on the product only after the BIS approves of the quality and completes the scrutiny process. The manufacturer has to pay a marking fee to display the logo on its product and also should conform to the standard testing procedures as approved by the BIS. • Alternatively the manufacturer can also submit a self-evaluation or verification report for the product the application is submitted.
