  1. Does Bad Oral Hygiene Put You At Greater Risk of Alzheimer's Disease? Brushing your teeth twice a day is good for your oral health and your overall health. Taking good care of your teeth means you can avoid other serious illnesses as well. Poor dental health can be the root cause of multiple ailments that might not seem directly related to dental hygiene, but it is believed that many health problems are affected in how well you can take care of your teeth. According to a study done by researchers at New York University (NYU) gum inflammation may be one of the reasons behind Alzheimer's disease. The researchers studied the relationship between cognitive function and periodontal inflammation over a period of 20 years with 152 individuals to arrive at this conclusion. Another study conducted by The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) School of Medicine and Dentistry suggested that people with adverse dental health might be at a greater risk of Alzheimer's disease. In this research, brain samples from ten patients with dementia were compared to brain samples from ten patients without dementia. It was found that patients with dementia had presence of bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis in their brains that is commonly associated with gum disease. Looking at the conclusions from the research mentioned above, it is easy to understand why taking care of your teeth is not only good for your dental health but also your overall health. Along with brushing your teeth, you should make sure to visit your dentist regularly and keep up with your dental checkup schedule. If you're living in or near Johns Creek, you can always visit DentFirst, Johns Creek for a checkup.
