What Should Be Kept in Mind When Choosing Packaging Adhesives? No one would like to buy food products which have unattractive and loose packaging. Consumer safety is critical when manufacturing packaging for food and beverages. Packaging adhesives used for food products are those packaging practices which are adopted for the laminating process of plastic films and aluminium foils used as packaging materials for various kinds of food, such as snacks and vacuum-packed foods. For food-related applications, both water-based and hot melt adhesives are the safest. Usually, when solvent-type adhesives are used, the release of VOC that ghat is- a volatile organic compound occurs at the time of dilution of the adhesive and during the drying process of the solvent, which is considered a problem. To cope with this problem, various kinds of adhesives, including a high-solid type in which the amount of organic solvent is reduced, a water-based type for which tap water can be used, and a non-solvent type for which no dilution with a solvent is required. While selectingpackaging adhesives for food and beverages, a few considerations are important to be kept in mind- Food Contact Safety - one needs to comply with the regulations and guidelines set by food safety authorities. Migration and Odor - packaging adhesives should have low migration properties that is they do not transfer from the packaging material to the food. They should be formulated in a way that minimises any undesirable door or taste that could affect the food’s quality. Temperature and Environmental Resistance - it should withstand a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions, including refrigeration, freezing, and exposure to moisture or humidity. Adhesion strength - it should provide strong and reliable bonding between various packaging, such as paper, cardboard, plastic films, and aluminium. Quick Curing and drying - these properties are essential to increase production efficiency and reduce the chances of contamination during packaging processes. Compatibility- the adhesive should be compatible with the material’s surface properties to ensure proper adhesion and prevent delamination. It becomes essential for manufacturers to discuss all the required points related to the packaging adhesive with the adhesive suppliers in choosing relevant packaging adhesive depending upon the specific requirements of food products, that also comply with all the respective regulations and industry standards.
