ABSTRACT • Communication through optics using latest technology called Free Space Optics (FSO). • FSO does not require cable and can withstand radio jamming. • Aim – To use FSO as a complement to fiber optics.
INTRODUCTION TO THE CONCEPT OF FREE SPACE OPTICS • FSO is a line-of-sight technology which uses LASERS and Photo detectors to provide optical connections between two points—without the fiber.
ADVANTAGES OF FSO COMPARED TO OTHER TECHNIQUES • Lower cost. • FSO can be easily deployed. • Bandwidth can easily be scaled.
FSO: OPTICAL OR WIRELESS? • FSO share several characteristics with fiber optics. • It uses the same optical transmission wavelength and components as fiber optics. • Important breakthrough in FSO is the invention of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA).
HOW IT WORKS ? • It is based on connectivity between FSO based optical wireless units. • Each consisting of an optical transceiver to provide full duplex capabilities.
FREE SPACE OPTICS SUBSYSTEMS • On the transmitting side the important aspects are size and quality of the system. • On the receiving side the important aspects are the aperture size and the f-number.
DATA SECURITY • In FSO an infrared beam slightly above the visible spectrum is used hence it is invisible to the normal human eyes. • Any attempt to interrupt the beam is possible only near the receiver terminus as it passes in a line of sight which is invisible.
FSO CHALLENGES: • Fog. • Absorption. • Scattering. • Physical obstructions. • Building activity. • Safety. • Scintillation.
ADVANTAGES OF FSO SYSTEMS • Installation cost is very low as compared to laying Fiber. • Highly secure transmission possible. • High data rates, upto 2.5 Gbps at present and 10 Gbps in the near future.
CONCLUSION • FSO provides high speed links that customers need without the cost of laying fiber to the end user. • It’s the most secure networking technologies.
