  1. Windows 8.1: Microsoft's Big Update Explained in Photos Photo Album Windows 8.1 is a free update to Windows 8. It will begin rolling out as a download in the Windows Store on Oct. 17. One of the changes lets you better adjust the size of the live tiles on the Start Screen. (Microsoft)

  2. One of the best parts about Windows 8 was that you could place apps side by side, now in Windows 8.1 Microsoft has improved the ability to adjust the size of the apps on the screen. You can drag the center bar to adjust the sizes of the apps on the right or left. (Microsoft)

  3. And if two apps side by side isn't enough for you, you can now view four apps side by side.(Microsoft)

  4. Where you get those apps looks new too. Microsoft has redesigned the Windows Store, better surfacing the ratings, descriptions and recommended apps. )

  5. You can now search the Web right from the Search Charm. Start typing in a term and it will search the computer and also use Bing to find you broader results. If you search for a popular term (person, place, etc.) -- for example, "San Diego" --you will get a search portal with photos, weather and other information (Microsoft)

  6. Microsoft has added an RSS reader-like app. You can add webpages to your Reading List and then view them in a nice format in the Reading List app.

  7. Microsoft says Internet Explorer 11 is faster now. The navigation controls and the open tabs are now displayed on the bottom of the screen. (Microsoft)

  8. You can still get to the regular desktop by tapping the Desktop icon but Microsoft has put the Start button back in the left corner to take you back to the Start Screen. (Microsoft)

  9. Microsoft has also improved its Photos and Camera apps. You can get to the camera easily now from the lock screen, take panorama images and using the take rapid-fire shots or a Photo Loop so you don't miss the moment. (Microsoft)

  10. You can then take those good photos and put them on your lock screen. The lock screen now supports multiple images. (Microsoft)
