4. Upon completion of this segment, student will understand the importance of, and uses for, the following items: • PFD vest – Personal Floatation Device vest (provides buoyancy) • Bilge Pump – tool used to remove excess water from inside of kayak (while on the water) • Water, Sports Drink – to keep hydrated before, during, and after strenuous paddles • Drysack(s) – to keep clothes and valuables dry while on the water • Navigation Aids – Waterproof map, waterproof GPS, compass • VHF marine radio – submersible two-way radio for emergency contact • Spare Paddle – mounted and tethered to deck in event you are separated from primary paddle • Spray Skirt – worn around waist and secured to cockpit rim; provides warmth & water-tight seal • First Aid Kit – include BandAids, Neosporin, aspirin / ibuprophen, tweezers, gauze, tape, insect repellant, compress bag • Tow Rope – used to provide (or receive) assistance in emergency • Paddle Float – inflatable bladder placed over paddle blade (assists in floatation) • Sunscreen/Hat/Sunglasses – provide protection from sunburn when on reflective surface (water) • Towels – to dry off after paddle, swim, or shower • Toiletries – Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, toilet paper • Sleeping Gear – Tent, sleeping bag; pillow, ground mat • (Dry) Clothing – to change into when done paddling for the day • Cooler – to keep food & drinks cold; store cold compress; ice • Toolkit – include needle-nosed pliers, screwdrivers, knife, rudder cable, nuts & bolts, decking, waterproof flashlight (with fresh batteries), matches/lighter, can and/or bottle opener • Gloves** – avoid blisters from repetitive motion of paddling; protect from hypothermia • Wetsuit/Drysuit** - provide protection from hypothermia in event of a capsize **Optional in warm weather, mandatory when paddling in cold water/weather PRINT < BACK Program Note: Clicking individual items hyperlinks to corresponding program content NEXT >

5. When in doubt ….. Float. • PFDs (Personal Floatation Device) vests are required any time you are on the water • No member will be allowed to participate in JSSKA outings without wearing one < BACK NEXT >

6. How dry I am…. • Hatches do not provide adequate protection against incoming water • Some items (clothing, snacks, towels, and valuables) should always be stored in drybags while on the water < BACK NEXT >

7. How wet I’ll be…… • One certainty in kayaking is… you will get wet • The preferred tool to quickly remove large amounts of water from kayak interior compartments is a bilge pump < BACK NEXT >

8. Unlike in Real Estate, a key to kayaking is “hydration, hydration, hydration” • Kayaking is very strenuous by nature • The importance of staying hydrated before, during, and after kayaking can not be overemphasized • NOTE: Alcohol is not considered proper hydration < BACK NEXT >

9. Failure to prepare is preparing to fail. • A Trip Plan should be made showing method & time of contact, area of travel, and overnight accommodations • Leave a copy with someone not participating in trip • Group leader should have proper training, waterproof maps, compass, and two-way VHF marine radio < BACK NEXT >

10. Come on and cover me • Spray covers provide warmth and protection from wind in cool/cold conditions • Some temporary resistance to water in the event of capsize • Gloves are strongly recommended when paddling in cold weather/water < BACK NEXT >

11. Up a creek……. • Unforeseen circumstances can separate kayaker from his/her primary paddle • Pack a spare and you’ll never be “without a paddle” < BACK NEXT >

13. Help, I Need Somebody.. • Always get help when lifting kayak to/from rooftop • Kayak should always be empty when lifting to/from rooftop • Tow rope bag should be stored in an easily accessible area of the cockpit • Paddle Float is an inflatable bladder placed over the paddle blade that aids in buoyancy. 14. Made in the shade • The reflective nature of water makes it crucial that kayakers use protective items like sunglasses, hats, lip balm & sunscreen • Croagies (protective straps) should be worn to keep eyeglasses from falling in water < BACK NEXT >
