  1. Heart Valve Surgery In Delhi Are you suffering from angina, breathlessness, or blackout? All these can be signs of narrowed aortic valve and this condition can be managed with Heart Valve Aortic Surgery performed by best heart surgeon in Delhi Dr. Sujay Shad. Most patients have these symptoms if they have a leaky or narrowed aortic valve. In such a case, Aortic valve replacement is the ideal procedure that is recommended by Dr. Sujay Shad, best heart doctor in India. The heart comprises of four valves which function to ensure the correct direction of blood flow through the heart. If there is a problem in the complete opening of the valve, there will be obstructed flow of blood (a condition called valve stenosis or narrowing) and leakage of blood in the backward direction (a condition known as valve regurgitation or incompetence). Thus, the heart is forced to pump harder in order to make sure there is proper blood circulation. Aortic valve surgery or Heart valve surgery in Delhi performed by Dr. Sujay Shad is an open surgery performed to treat valve-related diseases. It repairs or replaces the malfunctioning valve so that its function is fully restored to the heart. The operation significantly improves the symptoms of valve diseases and the quality of life of the patient. What is involved in heart valve surgery? Traditionally, in the operation of a heart valve, the surgeon mostly accesses the heart by cutting in the middle of the breastbone. During the Heart Valve Surgery in Delhi/NCR

  2. performed by Dr. Sujay Shad, a heart-lung bypass machine is used to circulate blood throughout the body. The heart is opened up to reach the affected valve followed by its repair or replacement. The diseased or damaged valves are treated in either of the following ways: ● Valve repair- This is a rarely performed treatment option. The different ways to repair the valve include using tissue patches to cover holes in the valve, separation of fused valve cups, and reshaping of tissues to ensure that the valve closes fully. It is usually performed for floppy or leaky mitral valves that are not seriously damaged. ● Valve replacement- There are two methods involved in replacing an old, severely damaged, or diseased valve with a new one. These include traditional open-heart surgery and Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI- a keyhole surgery). The replacement valve is either a biological (animal tissue-bovine or porcine) or artificial/man-made (mechanical) valve. Depending upon the age and other conditions, the new valve type is chosen. In the case of minimally-invasive Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), an incision is made in the groin area to access the heart through an artery. A catheter along with a new replacement valve is inserted through the incision and guided to its destination. When it reaches the patient’s diseased valve, it is expanded inside it. This surgery is safe and effective and full recovery can be achieved in days rather than months. As there is no full breastbone split involved, there is minimal risk of bleeding or having an infection. The patient can have improved breathing and swifter discharge from the hospital The surgery lasts for a minimum of four hours and is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Pre-surgery preparation: An initial meeting is held between the patient and with Dr. Sujay Shad who explains what the procedure entails along with its benefits, risks, and side effects. As the patient is to be heavily sedated, it is advised to stop eating or drinking the night before the surgery (i.e. a few hours before the surgery). If considering valve replacement, an electrocardiogram is done for the patient. Post-surgery: After the aortic valve surgery, a one-week hospital stay is required and 6 to 8 weeks (about three months) of recovery. The time for full recovery may vary as every patient responds to the treatment differently. Throughout the hospital stay, the patient is carefully monitored for the vitals by the multi-disciplinary team of heart specialists. Generally, the patient will wake up shortly after the effect of anesthesia wears off and can sit on the bed to sip fluids. The next day with the help of a physiotherapist, the patient can move out of the bed to take short walks or sit on the chair. When the consultant allows, the patients are recommended to resume their usual routine, including work or exercise.

  3. Soon after the surgery, the patient can expect some discomfort and is given pain relief medication. Some blood thinners may be consumed to prevent blood clot formation during the body’s natural response to the mechanical valve. If there is a metal valve used for replacement, the patient must undergo warfarin (an anticoagulant) therapy. In cases wherein the patient has already undergone an earlier heart valve surgery or has existing heart valve disease, the risk of endocarditis (inflammation of the heart’s inner lining) is more.
