  1. PEEL AWAY THE YEARS Manhattan Skin Rejuvenation

  2. CHEMICAL PEEL Age, stress, genetics, and the environment can all conspire against your appearance.  A chemical peel removes the damaged outer layers of your skin to reveal younger-looking skin just below the surface. The results from a chemical peel can leave your skin looking smoother and brighter, and depending on the peel you choose, your recovery time can be minimal. In fact, recovery time from certain chemical peels can be so short that you often don’t have to take any time off from work or other regular activities at all.

  3. CHEMICAL PEEL • Many variables involved in the application of a chemical peel, including the concentration of the product and the length of time it remains on the skin • Two types- alpha-hydroxy acids, or AHAs and Trichloroaceticacid (TCA) • Not a replacement for surgery

  4. Alpha-hydroxy Acids(AHA) • Mildest peel, produce light peels • glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids • provide smoother, brighter-looking skin  • treat fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne • Some redness or irritation, but no real recovery time

  5. Trichloroacetic Acid • Stronger than AHAs, and strengths varies • are most often used to smooth small surface wrinkles, correct uneven pigment, and address blemishes.  • Takes about 15 minutes, recover time 7-10 days • More than one procedure may be necessary to achieve desired results

  6. Planning your PEEL • Seek out board certified plastic surgeon with skin care rejuvenation experience • Some states allow no medical degree required to administer peel • Individual variables- concentration of the product and the length of time it remains on the skin • Discuss expectations during consultation

  7. Uncertainty and risk Chemical peel is normally a safe procedure when it is performed by a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon. Alpha-hydroxyAcid Trichloroacetic Acid Skin NOT bleached, able to produce pigment Avoid sun exposure for several months to protect new skin may also produce some unintended color changes in the skin. • May cause stinging, redness, irritation and crusting • As the skin adjusts to the treatment regimen, these problems will subside.

  8. Peels at a glance Alpha-hydroxy Acid Trichloroacetic Acid Uses: Smoothes out fine surface wrinkles Removes superficial blemishes Corrects pigment problems Considerations: Can be used on neck or other body areas May require pre-treatment with Retin-A or AHA creams Treatment takes only 10-15 minutes Peel depth can be adjusted Repeat treatment may be needed to maintain results Sun block must be used for several months Healing is usually quick Uses: • Smoothes rough, dry skin • Improves texture of sun-damaged skin • Aids in control of acne • Can be mixed with bleaching agent to correct pigment problems • Can be used as TCA pre-treatment Considerations: • A series of peels may be needed • As with most peel treatments, sunblock use is recommended

  9. The Procedure Alpha-hydroxy Acid Trichloroacetic Acid Typically, the skin is first thoroughly cleansed. Then, the surgeon will carefully apply the TCA solution. You may feel a stinging sensation as the peel solution is applied, but this feeling will quickly pass. A full-face TCA peel usually takes no more than 15 minutes. Two or more TCA peels may be needed to obtain the desired result, and those may be spaced out over several months. Mild TCA peels may be repeated as often as every month. • Applied to cleansed skin • Usually 10 minute procedure • Depending on strength, periodic treatments may be necessary

  10. Recovery Alpha-hydroxy Acid Trichloroacetic Acid A crust or scab will form on the treated area Pain medication sometimes prescribed Tape (if applied) removed after day or two May cause significant swelling In about a week to ten days, your new skin will be apparent and you should be healed sufficiently to return to your normal activities • Common to experience some temporary flaking or scaling, redness and dryness of the skin • A fresher and improved skin texture will result with continued AHA treatments
