Diesel engines produce significant amounts of particulates in their soot caused by incomplete combustion of fuel, although this has been steadily improved over the years by technology such as common-rail fuel injection. Nevertheless, diesel particulates are still a problem and that is why there is a special filter fitted to modern diesels to catch them u2013 the DPF.
