  2. Elder abuse in nursing home – A Guide • With more than 3.2 million adults at care facilities and nursing homes in the US, there are over 40 percent who are in and out of nursing care. The number of homes growing with more and more elders is left with no option than nursing homes and care facilities. Over the years elder abuse has also grown particularly at residential is facility and it is hard to detect or report.

Types of elder abuse • Physical abuse where injury or pain is inflicted on the seniors • Neglect where food, healthcare, hygiene, shelter or protection is not provided when needed. • Exploitation where assets, property, funds are misused by the care givers for the benefit of third party without the knowledge of the elders.

Abandonment where elders are vulnerable and denied custody or care • Emotional abuse where mental pain, distress, anguish is inflicting upon the elder in both verbal and non-verbal manner like intimidating, threatening or humiliation • Self neglect where the elder is unable to perform self care tasks threatening their safety and health. • Sexual abuse: Any kind of sexual contact with consent.

  5. Nursing home abuse can be related to physical harm with an intention to hurting the elders or restraining from care. Some of the elder abuses at nursing home include: • Bruising and cuts • Broken bones and fracture • Frequent infections • Bed sores • Mood Swings • Dehydration • Not taking food or medicines
