The Benefits Of Wearing Custom-Made Earplugs All over the world people wear ear protection when they know that they are at risk of putting unnecessary stress on their hearing ability due to the exposure of their ears to noise, either ongoing or in isolated cases. That is why custom-made earplugs have become so popular in recent times. EXAMPLES OF NOISE THAT COULD BE REGARDED AS ‘DANGEROUS’ There are many examples of how you can expose your ears to the dangers of loud noise. Look at the following, for example: •Shooters practicing their craft at the range; hunters taking to the field. •The military either prepares or during operation; the same applies to law enforcement agencies. •Managers and their workers in noisy factory environments, or those standing close to aircraft taking off. The sound of a jet taking off close by can lead to deafness, for example. •Open-air pop and other concerts, noisy restaurants, and bars. •Nightclubs with ongoing loud music; think of, especially, the DJs too. •Fitness classes, loud sporting events, also motorized events such as stock cars. •Power tools, lawnmowers, and sirens. The list goes on. WHY WOULD YOU WEAR EARPLUGS? If the above (and more) applies, then it would be a good idea to consider acquiring hearing protection such as, for example, custom-made earplugs. Earplugs, regardless of the type you are wearing, serve an important purpose as they help to block out sounds at levels that are considered to be damaging to one’s hearing ability. Without such protection it is possible that individuals could develop tinnitus (constant ringing sound in the ears) and NIHL – Noise-Induced Hearing Loss. These conditions may well be prevented if only individuals take the necessary steps, such as wearing some form of protection for the ears during those times they are exposed to high noise levels or unacceptably high decibels. DECIBELS The intensity (i.e. the strength as it were) at which sound is measured is known as ‘decibels’. A short explanation should throw light upon this term. The decibel (dB) represents 1/10th of a Bel, named after Alexander Grham Bell, who introduced the telephone to the world. This unit (the decibel) is used worldwide to measure sound intensity.
So what is an acceptable dB level? It is generally accepted that normal human conversation (not screaming or shouting) takes place at around 60 – 70 dB where 70 d B represents the middle of the range as the average person knows it. It is also approximately equivalent to the sound made by a washing machine (not spinning), with people whispering at, say, 30 decibels. At around 90 dB you may be listening to the running of a motorcycle engine, and at 120 a bulldozer or power tool. A gunshot right at your ears, such as a .22, measures at 140 with other rifles measuring at around the same dB and more. What audiologists and scientists agree upon is that at 120 dB and more, you could well be exposing your hearing to dangerously high noise levels. CUSTOM-MADE EARPLUGS EXPLAINED Custom-made earplugs are a more recent addition to devices to be worn to help individuals protect their hearing during shooting exercises or other events and times when extremely loud sounds can be detrimental to their hearing. These protective devices are manufactured upon request and are not sold as a mass item on a shelf in the local shop. They offer advanced features such as digital ability so that the user can control the sound around them. This means you can decide how loud (or how soft) you want the sound to be, and settings in these custom-made earplugs block out all harmful sounds and noise as they let through only sounds at acceptable dB, for example, sounds at normal conversation and similar circumstances. Being made upon request means that these earplugs are far superior to similar products that you buy over the counter as they are manufactured for the profile of a specific customer and their ears. The most advanced of these fit tightly – and comfortably –into the user’s ear and can be worn for many hours at a time without causing the user any inconvenience.
