  1. Te Cost of Fake Antimalarial Drugs Fake medicines are a pressing issue, especially in the context of antimalarial drugs. Counterfeit or substandard antimalarial drugs waste resources and contribute to the rise of drug-resistant malaria strains, putting countless lives at risk. 1 According to the World Malaria Report 2022, there were 247 million estimated cases globally in 2021. 2 Malaria burden was heaviest in the WHO African Region, with an estimated 95% of cases and 96% of deaths; 78.9% of all deaths in this region are among children aged under 5 years. 3 267,000 deaths every year are believed to be linked to falsified or substandard antimalarial medicines. 4 Since 2016, malaria cases have increased; the largest annual increase of 13 million cases was observed between 2019 and 2020 during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. 5 Malaria case incidence reduced from 82.3 per 1000 population at risk in 2000 to 57.2 in 2019, before increasing again to 59.4 in 2020. 6 Reports of counterfeit or falsified antimalarials rose 90 percent between 2005 and 2010, according to a 2014 article in the Ma- laria Journal. 7 According to WHO, the cost of caring for people who have used falsified or substandard medical products for malaria treat- ment in sub-Saharan Africa ranges from $12 million to $44.7 million per year.
