Getting Ready for Oktoberfest: How to Wear Your Dirndl Oktoberfest 2k18 seasons is still quite a ways away, but it is important to plan ahead if you want to make sure you have the best time possible! Oktoberfest is a traditional festival and with it comes traditional clothing. Therefore, sporting a dirndl or a pair of lederhosen is a must! But beware, because as with many other traditional clothing from around the world, there is some vital how-to-wear rules to be aware of in order to not come out looking silly on the day of the festival. In this post we will go over some essentials to consider before putting on that dirndl! You MUST wear a blouse under the dirndl dress. If your dirndl bodice dress did not come with a blouse, it is of incredible importance to go out and buy one as soon as possible. This one is considered to be a cardinal sin amongst Germans, since you cannot call your ensemble a dirndl until you have the dirndl trinity: the blouse, the bodice dress, and the apron. Seriously, do not make this mistake! Buy dirndls ahead of time, or at least try them on in advance because buying them off the rack will sometimes require you to see a seamstress. You want to make sure you make these alterations and have the dirndl ready in time for Oktoberfest. The bodice part is supposed to fit you very fittingly, to exaggerate a bit, like a second skin. Now, you want to make sure you can breathe in the dirndl, but you want to make sure the bodice is fitted exactly right, any leftover fabric will result in creasing. Creasing is an eyesore and will announce the world that your dirndl is ill-fitting.

  2. Tie your apron to the correct side! This tiny detail carries a huge amount of importance. The side you tie your apron knot to will display your relationship status. At a festival like Oktoberfest, you want to make sure you get this right. Here’s the breakdown: to the left if you’re single and to the right if you’re married/taken. It gets a little more detailed with tying to the back to show you’re a widow, and tying in the middle of the front to show you’re a virgin. We think keeping it simple (left or right) is ideal.
