Picture It - Build Your Future In Italy, Triggiano BA
I’m presenting to you what I did for the last 7 months in Italy, Triggiano during my project Picture It - Build Your Future, My name is Michalina, I’m 20 years old graduated student of Economy Technical School in Gdynia, Poland. but before that little backstory of who I am and how I got to Puglia.
My journey with the ESC world began a few years ago, as a mentor of long term volunteers, where I would support them during their stay in Poland, and as much as I loved this role and what it gave me, which is many new friends, memories and knowledge, I wanted the abroad volunteering experience for myself, to also have this adventure. When I started looking for a project opportunity I was specifically looking for one in Italy and I knew I wanted my project to be based on work with kids, so my criteria were quite specific, but when I came across this project, it was a perfect match for me.
What’s my project about? ❏ Supporting project manager in developing local and international projects, ❏ Volunteering in social restaurant, ❏ Promoting volunteering: by creating a blog, through social networks, ❏ Supporting local school English teacher in daily classes, ❏ Creating English curse for youth and people in need
During summer months, I supported three different summer camps, based in Triggiano, Capurso and Bari. All of them had their similarities and differences.
Triggiano Happy Campus Which started on June 12. We held many activities at the summer camp, where we hosted a lot of children from the age group of 3-11. Made plans beforehand and divided the children into different age groups and supported them to practice their English with activities suitable for age groups, activities such as dancing, outdoor games, painting and treasure hunting, very pleasant, fun and educational time.
Bari Pirate Camp This summer the little pirate crew had incredible adventures, learned by playing and sailed on the sea. Each week had different theme: Week 1: Climate Justice Week 2: Learning Technology Week 3: Art Therapy - art as a means of expression and well-being Week 4: Gioco di Ruolo Rievocativo I was with this team every week as a partner in this adventure. I was able to bring a different perspective to the camp by communicating with the children there in English, playing games and participating in the activities.
Capurso Campo Estivo In this summer camp I had the opportunity to work with kids that were met with difficulties as attention deficit and hyperactivity on activities as arts and crafts, English workshops, watching movies together, dancing, learning how to be a team and how to just great time.
MENSA Mensa is a social restaurant , where people in need come to have lunch, it’s open from Monday to Sunday with exception on Wednesday, everyone is welcomed and it has been open since 2004. My work there is simply helping in preparation the meals, serving the people and cleaning after, as doing the dishes, throwing away the trash and sweeping the floor.
On Arrival Training My arrival training took place from 10 July to 14 July in Morlupo, organized by the Italian Youth Agency. Participants were 23 volunteers from Portugal, Lithuania, Romania, Morocco, Turkey, France, Belgium, Hungary, Greece, Slovenia, Germany and of course Poland. Everyone had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the country, share their experiences, and receive information on the Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps learning mobility programs managed by the Italian Youth Agency.
Pleiadi PLEIADI is a place with the aim of taking care of children and young people who face learning difficulties. The activities of the PLEIADI Association go far beyond simple teaching assistance, creating an inclusive and stimulating environment for young participants. I was involved as a tutor after-school English lessons and various other afternoon extracurricular activities for the children I bringed not only a wealth of unique skills, but also a cultural richness that further enriches the experience of the young participants. The diversity of perspectives and approaches that I bringed to their environment is a real added value for everyone.
What did I do in my free time? Most of my free time I dedicated to sightseeing nearby cities, as well as those that are bit far away. And I studied and practised my italian, I putted a lot of work into learning new language. Here’s few of my favourite places I visit:
My piece of advice for you: if you are thinking about joining the ESC community as an abroad volunteer, search for an opportunity that either has something to do with your interest or the opposite, maybe you’ll find new passion and go for it, jump into deep water.
