Claiborne County P-16 Activities • P-16 Council-Marketing the importance of education via tabletops, which are being placed in area business, government ,and schools. • Participated in the Governor’s three Star Award for Economic and Community Development. • Plans are in progress for 2 billboards to market and promote P-16 in our county. • P-16 council members are actively involved on several school/community advisory councils (Pre-K Advisory Council, Literacy Council, etc.)
Early Reading First Grant at The Alpha School- $2.9 million over 3 years.
Governor’s Voluntary Pre-K Program Claiborne County received monies for 3 more Pre-K classrooms
Cumberland Gap High has a 21st CLC, Claiborne High has a LEAPS Grant (Lottery for Education after School Programs)
Supplemental Education Services (SES Grant) at TNT serves 40 students in a one-on-one tutoring model; 38 out of 40 students became Proficient or Advanced
All schools are currently using the results of a Family Friendly Survey to enhance their school/home/parental involvement programs
The Claiborne County School System, in conjunction with Clinch Powell Educational Cooperative, participates in an Attendance Incentive Program which consists of a new care give-away to a senior in the 5 county region.
Through collaboration with Clinch Powell Head start, the school system preschool program and the CP Head start Program have implemented the Scott Foreman Pre-K Literacy Curriculum in all preschool classrooms in our county
We have an Early Childhood Council which includes school system preschool providers head start preschool providers, head start preschool providers and local daycare programs. The Early Childhood Literacy Council provides Literacy Toolboxes (big plastic tubs filled with quality children’s books, nursery rhyme charts and CD’s, large knob puzzles, magnetic letters of he alphabet, etc.) which circulate among the daycare providers on a rotating basis. The Early Childhood Literacy Council meets quarterly to provide staff development for all of our preschool providers, a well as serve as a support network.
Both high schools are in their second year of implementation of Credit Recovery Classes which allows high school students who failed a course using Plato computer software
We are working with Walters State Community College on an initiative involving our high school math teachers to improve ACT scores
We are referring adults to the Tennessee Technology Center for additional training.
We now have Literacy Leaders at 6 out of 7 of our elementary schools. The Literacy Leaders work with the classroom teachers as a Reading Coach to help the teachers provide quality reading instruction based on scientific research best practices.
Clairfield Elementary is participating in a State Improvement Grant (SIG) to enhance literacy instruction in grades 4-8.
H.Y. Livesay was recognized as a National Core Knowledge School and also Received a Tennessee Academic Achievement Award for excellence.
All of our professional staff are “Highly Qualified” according to NCLB criteria

Claiborne County Youth AmbassadorsClaiborne Youth Ambassadors is designed to prepare high school juniors or seniors to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, schools, workplace and community. • Improve critical thinking skills: by presenting multiple viewpoints on important issues. • Enhance leadership skills: to better understand leadership and begin to identify their own particular leadership strengths. • Better understanding of the democratic process: discussions on local and state government. • Development goal-setting skills: through conducting a long term project • Realizing the importance of leadership
Leadership Training • Introspective opportunities to think about yourself as a leader • Modeling or demonstration of leadership by keynote speakers • Practice leadership competencies • Sessions with specific leadership themes • Leadership games and simulation activities
Undoubtedly, the future poses numerous circumstances for which strong, ethical leadership is essential. Therefore, the following five specific themes will be discussed.
Democratic System and Business. A basic understanding of profit, competitive democratic process that provides citizens with incentives; economic and otherwise Education. Education is indispensable to the quality of our society. It id basic to our infrastructure and to the ability of many communities to attract business and industry. Education will dictate how well we shall compete globally in the future. Leadership for service Media/communications. Modern media undeniably impacts our daily lives, be it at home or in the economy. Recent advances in the way people communicate represent nothing less than a technological revolution. Future of our society. This topic covers questions and answers that will impact the future of the Ambassadors, as well as those of family, business communities as homeland security, emergency services, and others.
