Welcome to Mr. Cogbill’s Life Science Class • What is Life Science • What is everyday Life Science • Examples of Current Research at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Life Science • How Students are Graded (Assessment) • What are Standards (State and National) • What Students are Graded on (Experiments, Labs, Projects, Field Trips)
LIFE SCIENCE (Biology) • Definition(s) • The science of life and of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution. • The life processes of a group or category of living organisms.

Graduate Program Masters Degree = 2 to 3 yrs PhD = 5 to 7 yrs Most BioScience Programs Pay for your tuition Pay you a stipend (salary) Provide medical benefits Fellowships TAships GAships/RAships
Promoting Interest in Science I am currently a collaborator and representative from Stevenson Middle School for the following grant proposal. Howard Hughes Medical Institute Initiative for Biomedical Research Institutions - 2007Queens Medical Center Ulu Kukui Project HHMI Grant Proposal (.pdf)
Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum (PXE) • A multisystem disease • Affects elastic tissue • Affects skin, eyes, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular systems.
Purpose • To figure out what this gene does in flies so that we can then apply it to humans.
How do we do this? • Determine when and where the gene products are found in the fly. • Determine if this fly gene can function like the human gene “in vitro”. • Mutate (mess up) the gene in flies and see what happens.
HAWAII SCIENCE STANDARDS This is what we are to teach in class according to the Hawaii Department of Education. HCPS III
U.S. NATIONAL SCIENCE STANDARDS This is what students should be learning according to the national standards set forth by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
ASSESSMENT This is how lab/class work is graded.RUBRICS
