  1. Does current Telematics based tracking solutions really improve Operational Efficiency for Small and medium fleets/distributors?

  2. The telematics based Vehicle Gps Tracking Systems work by installing a GPS based tracking hardware in the vehicles and offer a web based application to Track & Trace the vehicles. The value provided is just some dots on a map which displays the vehicle’s current location and plus some other alerting features like Route deviation, Over-speeding, Geo-fence and some basic reports. These solutions are mainly available with proprietary tracking hardware and not much value is offered in the application side.

  3. While this may be suitable for companies which just need a visibility of the vehicles but for companies which distribute time critical supplies with strict delivery windows, the problem of real-time actionable insight for decision making is largely unmet. If we look at Automotive, Consumer Electronics, etc in the manufacturing vertical or areas like Food distribution, automotive aftermarket, Utilities & Services there is a mission critical need for Real-time Logistics Intelligence which is required for meeting business SLA’s.

  4. So there is a pertinent need for Systems that can collect GPS based location data and interface with Route planning systems to produce a Business aligned real-time dashboards for insight and decision making. These systems cannot work in isolation and needs to understand the logistics models used by the businesses like Milk Run, Just in Time and Cross-docking and complement the planning systems.

  5. Currently this kind of data is available to the large fleets and 3PLs mainly through a Telematics system connected to a TMS and for the small and medium fleets affording and implementing a TMS system is beyond their reach. Does a business in real-time know whether a delivery has been made to a customer ?. There is a lot of time and effort spent in reconciling deliveries/collection made from customers and is not always available online to businesses.

  6. The logistics industry needs to catch up on the mobility buzz and leverage the ‘BYOD’ model saving hardware costs and utilize mobile apps for Electronic Proof of Delivery, Weather Updates, Driver’s productivity data capture, etc.

The logistics industry needs to catch up on the mobility buzz and leverage the ‘BYOD’ model saving hardware costs and utilize mobile apps for Electronic Proof of Delivery, Weather Updates, Driver’s productivity data capture, etc. Very few products are available in the Asian market scenario and even in the western markets still these kinds of systems are in the evolving stages. Time for the small and medium distributors to catch up with open platforms and mobility initiatives that are revolutionizing other verticals…
