Ukraine's Black People Are Reporting Racism And Trying To Leave With millions of citizens in Ukraine leaving the country following Russia launched a deadly attack on Feb. 24 There are growing reports of discrimination against Black citizens of Ukraine as they try to flee the country. The hashtag #AfricansinUkraine is being utilized on Twitter to highlight instances of racial discrimination and to draw attention to the ways Black people are being neglected as they try to escape danger. According to the Independent, Black people seeking to quit the country have been left behind at border crossings and have been targeted for discrimination when trying to travel on public transportation to leave the country. One person also told the Independent that the family he was with was denied entry to a bus on its way to cross the border being told "no blacks." "I can't think of a scenario in which white Ukrainians could ever be denied asylum, so how they're treating us is unwarranted. It's baseless. We're all in the same boat, so let's push a common thread," the citizen said. Another medical student was involved in the war. They made use of social media to discuss their experiences. They claimed the war continued for a long time after they were able to traverse the border. "... Numerous buses passed through each hour, however not a single foreigner was allowed to pass," they posted on Twitter. Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement on Sunday, February. 27 that Nigerians will get visa-free entry into Hungary and Romania, and urged citizens to make their way towards the borders. Nigeria's President Buhari has taken to Twitter to protest the discrimination against Nigerian citizens who reside in Ukraine. He wrote: "...it was vital to treat all people with respect, dignity and with no favor. Solidarity with thousands of African students being blocked This weekend, stranded African citizens of Ukraine took to Twitter Spaces to discuss evacuation procedures and talk about their experiences in trying to leave the country.
