  1. India Vs USA – Education Differences From signing Logistics Exchange Memorandum to a bilateral military exchange of defense technology and joint corps exercises, India and the USA are close strategic allies and major defense partners. But the picture seems to be telling a different story when we talk about the education sector where both nations belong to the opposite sides of the coin. Despite having great number of reputed Universities and colleges in both the nations, teaching method is what seems to be totally different. Maintaining the reputation as rank no. 1 education institution in the world for 4 consecutive years, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is stealing the show in the education world and to counterpart the status, Indian Institute of Science (IIS) in Bangalore is still a part of the dream for millions of Indian students. But some sadness of the situation arise when IIS-Bangalore is postured at rank 147th in the world by QS World University Ranking and 6thwithin education institutions of BRICS colleague nations. Then a question emerges; why? Is there something which Indian educational institutes are lacking in? Why colleges in the USA are clinching top positions in the chart and ours are just waiting on the reserve bench for the substitute turn? We definitely need an equalizer. We Indians are known as very intelligent minds of the world and famous agencies like NASA, WHO, UNICEFF, Google, Facebook, etc. keen to offer prominent positions for Indian professionals to work on their grounds. Still our education system doesn’t even hold any position in top 90 educational structures of the world. What are the dissimilarities between Indian education and foreign education? When we look deeper at the situation, we understand the difference.

  2. THE DIFFERENCE 1) We are Bookworms: Higher education in India is simply based on 70-30 principle. Which states that curriculum in India are made up of 70% theory and 30% practical. We gorge the students with so much of the theories that practical implementations become difficult. This demotes the situation handling skills required to come out of various difficulties of life and professional dilemmas. Whereas, education in USA is based on the opposite principle of 70% practical and 30% theories. Real life experiments and instances are largely discussed and experienced during the classes to habituate students to work on international floors after the flawless international study. 2) Interpersonal Development: Interpersonal skills are divided into soft skills and hard skills. The former includes communication skills, decision making skills, self-motivation, leadership skills, team working skills, problem solving skills and time management. Whereas, the latter includes machine operating skills, earning a degree or certificate, data analysis, numeracy skills, programming language proficiency and planning skills. For a balanced skill distribution, an exquisite balance between practical and theoretical knowledge required while injecting international education into a student. Too much of theories may help you in understanding the skills, but practical knowledge helps in implementing them in real life scenarios. 3) Quality: Quality of education does not only depend on the rich curriculum, but also on the education infrastructure and research opportunities in a country. India spends 3.3% of the GDP on education as compared to an average5.8%spent in most of the developed countries. This means In short, India spends almost half of what other countries are spending for the betterment of their education system and infrastructure. Deficient student-teachers ratio deprives students in India to get personalized attention in class. Additionally, corruption is eroding the quality of education and creating long-term negative consequences for the society. Indian students perform best when given a chance to study in the US or any other educational expert country in the world. Remember, a fully equipped soldier is more devastating than a hungry one. 4) Career Opportunities: Statistics deliver an identical message when we compare the career circumstances of an Indian student who has studied in India and one who has studied abroad. Average starting salary of 1.2 lacs/annum of an engineer and 30 thousand/month for an MBA in India looks like a drop in the ocean when compared to 55 lacs/annum and 6 lacs/month respectively in the USA as per various international survey agencies. Correspondingly, 90% engineer graduates and 89% MBA’s in India are either unemployed or doing underperforming jobs in India proclaimed by the India Employability Report 2015 after a recent survey yesteryear. This definitely invited the world’s top educational counselors and career analysts and researchers to commence a debate and find the reasoning behind such massive difference.

  3. BY AND LARGE India is a country of talents and intelligence since before the time ‘Vedas’ and ‘Shastra’ were written and the zero was invented. All we need to have a rich curriculum filled with real life instances instead of just calculated theories. Alongside, the gaps with respect to infrastructure in the existing schools should be identified. Buildings, laboratories, libraries, career centers, disability services, financial aid offices, technical help desk, 24x7 online student assistance and state-of-the art research facilitations are a few of the points that come to mind when we talk about improving an educational system. The country’s government plays an important role in accrediting more education institutions to provide various options of courses and colleges to students as per their abilities and interests. This furthermore improves the student-teacher ratio in the classroom to pay customized attention to every student.
