What is Marketing? • “A broad field with one primary focus: assessing and generating demand for a firm’s products or services.” • At Penn State students can choose to focus on business to business marketing or business to consumer marketing.
Getting Schooled in Marketing • Courses Recommended: Consumer Behavior, Marketing Research, Global marketing, strategic marketing planning, sales management, retail management, business marketing, and advertising and promotion management • Other recommended courses include studying business law, economics, accounting, finance, mathematics, and statistics. • Penn State has its own set of requirements as well. • In addition to all these courses all students should complete a internship for at least two years.
How Marketing Is Affected by MIS • Marketing uses MIS very often • It is used to help decide what to promote • MIS helps Marketers decide on product pricing • It also helps determine where to sell products
Real Life Marketing • Highly competitive job ‘market’. • Marketing Majors deal with pricing goods, improving products, and promoting the companies services. • Long work weeks. According to a survey about two-thirds of marketing managers worked over forty hours a week.
