Agenda • Define and Describe Marketing. • Discuss Courses Needed for a Marketing Major. • Give insight to ‘real life’ situations. • Describe current Marketing issues in the business world. • Explain the role of Management information systems (MIS) in the Marketing field. • Outline entry level positions, advanced positions, and salary of a marketing major. • Give additional information on marketing.

  3. What is Marketing? • “A broad field with one primary focus: assessing and generating demand for a firm’s products or services.” • At Penn State students can choose to focus on business to business marketing or business to consumer marketing.

  4. Getting Schooled in Marketing • Courses Recommended: Consumer Behavior, Marketing Research, Global marketing, strategic marketing planning, sales management, retail management, business marketing, and advertising and promotion management • Other recommended courses include studying business law, economics, accounting, finance, mathematics, and statistics. • Penn State has its own set of requirements as well. • In addition to all these courses all students should complete a internship for at least two years.

  5. How Marketing Is Affected by MIS • Marketing uses MIS very often • It is used to help decide what to promote • MIS helps Marketers decide on product pricing • It also helps determine where to sell products

  6. Real Life Marketing • Highly competitive job ‘market’. • Marketing Majors deal with pricing goods, improving products, and promoting the companies services. • Long work weeks. According to a survey about two-thirds of marketing managers worked over forty hours a week.

Real Life Marketing (cont.) • Current Issues and “Hot Topics” • Growing employment rate in scientific and computer industries • Decline in employment in manufacturing industries • Internet Advertising • An end to Television Advertising? • Business Problems and Decisions • Finding new ways to sell products and maximize profit • Decisions made based on judgment, data, and surveys

  8. Positions in Marketing • Marketing Majors have many job opportunities. Some entry level positions include: • Public Relations Specialist • Sales Representative • Investment Manager • Media Planner • Marketing Assistant

  9. Advanced Marketing Positions • Some advanced level positions include positions in the following: • Sales Managers • Marketing Managers or Director • Marketing research analysts • Advertising and Promotional Managers • Public Relations Managers • Advertising Sales Agents

  10. Common Places of Business • A marketing majors workplace can be in many places. Including, but not limited to: • Insurance Agencies • Publishing Companies • Colleges/Universities • Retail/Discount Sales • Hospitals • Banks or Financial Institutions • Radio or Television Stations • Advertising Agencies • Consumer Product Companies

  11. $$ Salaries $$ • Average Annual Starting Salary for a marketing major is $33,873 . • The Average Marketing Manager makes $84,220. • Broken down into different types of companies that hire marketing managers: • Computer systems design and related services: $107,030 • Management of companies and enterprises: $98,700 • Insurance carriers: $86,810 • Architectural, engineering, and related services: $83,610 • Depository credit intermediation: $76,450 • The Average Starting Salary for a graduate of Smeal is around $80,000
