  24. Interphase Metaphase Prophase Learn more about the stages of Meiosis by clicking on the stage you wish to explore, after reading, click on the back arrow to continue Move on to practice quiz Multimedia Presentations

  25. Back Interphase • Interphase first replicates chromosomes into two identical sets Multimedia Presentations

  26. Back Prophase • DNA forms chromosomes, nucleus dissolves, spindles form. Every set of chromatids attach with their homologue to form tetrads. This connection is called synapsis, in which similar chromosomes (homologues) wrap around each other and may exchange pieces. This is called crossing over and results in new gene combinations on chromosomes that will produce genetically unique gametes. This random "shuffle" of genes ensures that the new zygote formed in fertilization will be genetically different from its parents. Multimedia Presentations

  27. Back Metaphase • The tetrads are moved by spindle fibers to the equator of the cell Multimedia Presentations

  28. Practice Quiz • Click on the link that represents the best response to the question below: • Prophase includes these processes: • a. DNA forms chromosomes, nucleus swells • b. DNA splits, nucleus disappears • c. DNA forms chromosomes, nucleus disappears • d. DNA splits, spindles disappear Multimedia Presentations

  29. Incorrect, Try Again! • Go back and try answering the question again, OR, go back and study more! Back Study More Back Answer Question Again Multimedia Presentations

  30. You are Correct! • DNA forms chromosomes, nucleus dissolves, spindles form. Every set of chromatids attach with their homologue to form tetrads.
