Rachna first heard of child marriage at a Children Club meeting run by World Vision India. Before that, she didn’t know child marriage was illegal. In her village, 60 km from Lalitpur town, children were married off when they hit puberty. Rachna’s parents Papu, 45, and Kamal, 44, married when they were 13 and 12 respectively. At 15, Rachna was at that crossroads. The family was beginning to look for a groom for Rachna. Then World Vision India stepped in. Rachna is now 18 years old and studying in the 12th standard. Her parents never attended school. They are farmers, and that would have been Rachna’s fate. “I would have been married if it was not for World Vision India. And I wouldn’t be in school,” Rachna says. Rachna’s parents began looking for a groom when Rachna was 15. World Vision India’s staff talked to her parents and sensitised them about the ills of child marriage. “I have a friend who got married when she was around 14. She bore a child, and she and her baby were sickly. In the Children Club, we learn about the health implications of child marriage on the mother and the baby. Parents are also sensitised,” says Rachna. A small intervention and counselling is all it takes to prevent child marriage in India. Send children back to school. My parents are understanding and they don’t force me anything now,” Rachna says Rachna has participated in Gender Mela organised by WV India to teach about gender equality through various activities.
Here, boys are asked to do household chores they would otherwise never do at home. In a male-dominated society, the gender landscape is much more balanced than it was. “Now even girls can be educated. If my brother can study, I can study too,” says Rachna.
