  1. How does PRP knee injection work?

  2. Yes, PRP injections help to promote healing. Before understanding how PRP works, let us first go through the meaning of PRP injections and their significance.

  3. What is PRP? • PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) therapy is a type of regenerative medicine that helps in stimulating the patient’s natural healing mechanism to heal itself. As we grow older, a lack of regenerative factors in our body helps in self-healing. In such cases, regenerative cells are injected directly into our bodies to accelerate this healing mechanism. • Here, PRP has regenerative cells. Platelets-rich plasma is rich in growth factors that help in quicker healing and promoting tissue growth. This treatment can naturally heal the injured joints, tendons, muscles, and ligaments. Since the blood cells are extracted from the patient’s own body, this treatment is safe with no risk of allergy or rejection.

  4. How does PRP injection work in your knee? • PRP is prepared by extracting blood from the patient’s body and running it through the centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. Once they are activated, these platelets are directly injected into the affected knee part. After injection, PRP releases growth factors that can stimulate the number of regenerative cells in your body. • Ultrasound imaging is used to guide this PRP injection. As the number of regenerative cells is injected in regular sessions, they can promote tissue repair followed by regrowth. Finally, the patient can experience a reduction in pain, improvement in functional outcomes, and better quality of life. Hence, the patient can get rid of symptoms for a longer duration. • To know more in detail about how PRP works, refer to the 2018 review

  5. How does PRP work, unlike other conventional treatments? • Medications such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and steroid injections are the most common conventional treatments recommended by doctors. • However, both these treatments can provide only short-term relief. Furthermore, they can cause serious side effects. • Hence, doctors do not recommend these treatments for a longer duration. • If there is no significant improvement in symptoms, doctors consider knee replacement surgery as a last resort. • Again, surgery involves a long post-rehabilitation session. • Unlike all these conventional treatments, PRP is a daycare procedure that can be performed using local anaesthesia. • The significant advantage of PRP treatment is patients need not have to be over-dependent on NSAIDs.

  6. How does PRP work, unlike other conventional treatments? • PRP treatment has no adverse side effects, unlike steroids and medications. There is no need for an extensive rehabilitation session after undergoing PRP treatment. • It is a minimally invasive procedure. As mentioned already, PRP treatment uses the patient’s own blood cells. • Hence, knee ailments can be treated naturally with no risk of allergy and rejection. • Furthermore, PRP followed by physical therapy provide quicker improvement in symptoms compared to physical therapy alone. • Undergoing physical therapy alone can be painful in case if you have a knee injury. • Hence, it is better to undergo PRP treatment first before proceeding with physical therapy. • This is why PRP treatment is worth a try since it is safe and cost-effective in treating knee osteoarthritis.
