Various Types of Backdrops For Best Photography By George Watson
Five Types of Backdrop • Canvas. • Muslin. • Seamless Paper. • Vinyl. • Chromakey.
Canvas Backdrop • The first photography backdrops were made of heavy canvas, painted with classical designs. • Canvas is a high quality choice because the cloth is free of glare. • Many photographers use a large canvas as a backdrop in the studio and a muslin or other backdrop for shooting in other locations.
Muslin Backdrop • Muslin is a versatile fabric for backgrounds because it can be used as a very neutral background or made to stand out, depending on the lighting. • The major advantage of muslin is that it can be stuffed into a bag for easy transportation and muslin does not show wrinkles
Seamless Paper Backdrop • Seamless paper is muslin's biggest competitor, especially in fashion photography. • The advantage is that once it gets dirty, it is easily ripped off and a fresh sheet is pulled down. • Paper is more reflective than cloth.
Vinyl Backdrop • Vinyl is a durable, flexible, sturdy outdoor/indoor backdrop. It's water resistant and is very easy to clean.
Chromakey Backdrop • Backdrops of various materials are made in chroma key green and blue. • Chromakey Backdrop are often made from a finely woven muslin.
