CIHR • New lead health research agency for Canada • Launched on June 7, 2000 • Funds 3000 researchers in academic settings, teaching hospitals, research institutes across Canada • Replaces the Medical Research Council of Canada • Establishes a new paradigm for funding research based upon virtual institutes, and a strategic multidisciplinary approach

Objective “To excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system…” Section 4, C-6, R.S.C. 2000

Eligible Applicants to CIHR • Broadening of CIHR`s eligible recipients, including: • researchers, scholars, health professionals affiliated with • Canadian postsecondary institutions; • non-governmental organizations (including community • organizations and regional health authorities) with a • research or research dissemination mandate; • Scientists and scholars working in government.

CIHR competitions Institute-driven Strategic Initiatives • Institutes determines and develops foci for RFAs • RFAs announced (starting Summer/Fall, 2001) • Research Proposals submitted in response to RFAs (Letters of Intent process likely) • Peer Review (administered by CIHR secretariat) • Timing of RFA announcements and proposal deadlines will vary but coordination is a goal • Funded from the “strategic initiative” envelop of the CIHR budget
