Sub Arctic Region • The Great Bear Lake is the biggest lake in Canada. The Sub Arctic Indians live where there’s flat frozen land all year long.
Animals • Where the Sub Arctic tribe lives, there’s a lot of big animals. • The animals in the Sub Arctic region are bear and moose. • Another large animal is caribou.
Climate • It is very cold in the Arctic region in winter. • The climate is around –50 degrees Fahrenheit. • In summer it’s around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Food • Sub Arctic Indians eat moose, caribou, and salmon. • They also eat bears, fish, beavers, and berries.
Shelter: Cabins • The Western tribes lived in cabins. • The cabins were made out of planks and out of rope. • The door was a hole.
Shelter: Wigwam • The Eastern tribes lived in wigwams. • Wigwams are made out of animal skins, trees, and bark.
Clothing • Men wore leather t-shirts and women wore leather dresses made out of caribou skins. • They made slippers called moccasins and they also wore snow shoes in winter.
Family life • In winter, the women made clothing and the kids went to school just like us.
European Influence • The Europeans traded beans, clothing, and other goods for animal furs and art work. • The Europeans traded at trading booths.
Sub Arctic Indians Today • The Sub Arctic Indians are now mining. • They’re also harvesting wild rice and also trapping animals.
Other • The Sub Arctic Indians made art work to trade with other Indians that liked the art work.
