Why does our gum bleed? 1) Gum Diseases Healthy Gum Gum affected by Periodontitis • Bleeding gums can be an early warning sign of gum disease. Gingivitis is the initial stage of gum disease. When it goes on to develop, it becomes a serious gum disease called periodontitis. • 2 types of periodontitis include: • Chronic periodontitis- caused by plaque build up and involves slow deterioration that may improve and get worse over time and causes destruction in the gums and toothbone. • Aggressive periodontitis - usually begins in childhood or early adulthood and occurs as a result of genetic disorders.
Why does our gum bleed? 2) Nutrient Deficiency • Deficiency in vitamin C and vitamin K could lead to frequent gum bleeding. • Consuming leafy greens and fresh citrus fruits will boost the level of Vitamins C and K. 3) Hormone Changes Hormone chnages occur during pregnancy will cause gum bleding for pregnant women during their second and third trimester.
How do we prevent gum diseases? 1) The Right brushing technique • Brushing two times a day especially brushing before going to bed in the night is highly advisable to prevent most of the dental related problems. Improper brushing habits can lead to inflamed gums causing bleeding. • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. • Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes. • Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth. • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes. • Brushing time : 3-5minutes.
How do we prevent gum diseases? 2) Consult with your Dentist • Visit your Dentist once for every six month because annual scaling/cleaning reduces bacterial load in one’s mouth. • This combined with proper dental hygiene actions and proper diet habits will keep the gums healthy.
How do we prevent gum diseases? 3) Eat the right food Intake foods which are rich in Vitamins C and K, possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to avert gum diseases. • Onion - Protects our gum by neutralizing oral bacteria. • Oranges, kiwis, pineapple, and strawberries are rich in Vitamin C. • Vegetables like spinach feed vitamins and minerals. • Dairy products like milk, yogurt are high in calcium and neutralize oral acids in the mouth.
