With so many Yoga Teacher Training courses to choose from… how to know which one is the right one for you Yoga Teacher Training Courses in India are being advertised on nearly every street. An aspiring yoga practitioner does not have to look very far when searching for a yoga teacher training school. From online searches, local posters and meeting other travellers, there are so many different factors that play a role in the deciding factor of which yoga teacher training course to undertake. The rise and popularity of teaching yoga Yoga Teacher Training and yoga retreats have been the talk of this millennia. Similar to the fate of other disciplines such as martial arts, yoga has become misunderstood by people - probably due to the pattern in which it is being taught and the way it is being utilised as a commercial tool for money-oriented goals. What is different about HIYC?
The teachers training course at Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre (HIYC) is designed to challenge these general ill conceptions about Yoga training. Unlike the common 200 and 300 hours for ‘Yoga Teacher’ certification, here at HIYC, we profess intensive training programs divided in various levels. These levels are designed rigorously by our master teacher Sharat Arora in order to bestow the best training for Yoga. The training constitutes of three levels which emphasise on focused guidance of the individual – the preceding Intensive Course (week 1-3), the Teachers Training Course (week 4-6) and the extended Assisting/Hands-On internship period at the Yoga Centres in Dharamshala and Goa. The Yoga Intensive journey The primary part of the TTC incorporates the 3 weeks of the Intensive Yoga Course concentrating on a particular subject, setting up the students for a profound investigation in their Yoga Practice. This time is devoted for the serious every day Practice of Asanas, Meditation, Relaxations and Pranayama - from the very early hours of morning until dusk. This time is an aggregate retreat where the students dedicate themselves totally to self- investigation, change and reconstruction, leaving no time for distractions or other activities. These three weeks in the Himalayan Shanti Ashram are guided by master teacher Sharat and his qualified teachers. Class times are about learning the poses on a deeper level through your own body and its capabilities and limitations. This stage is considered to be very essential for the students as without these 3 weeks of intensive training students are not enrolled to the next level. ‘’To become a master at any skill, it takes the total effort of your heart, mind and soul working in tandem.’’ – Maurice Young What is next after the Intensive training? It is taken after then by the 3 weeks of the pedagogical preparing during which the students concentrate on all the distinctive parts of Teaching this style of Yoga to others. It is intended for spurred professionals who wish to make the profound way of Yoga their lifestyle and might want to impart it to others guiding them on that way. The Layout of HIYC Teacher Training (week 4 to 6) During the Teachers Training pedagogical part of the Course, students are required to begin their day in the early hours with a Self-guided yoga practice, the sequence and pattern of which they were meticulously taught in the preceding Intensive course. At HIYC, we learn the importance of starting the practice with inversions, and depending on the student, it is followed by standing poses, twists, seated poses or
backbends. In HIYC, it is taught not to practice backbends with forward bends (seated poses) in the same practice / day. Self-directed group Pranayama sessions take place in the evening times and last between 45- 60 minutes. During the late morning sessions, usually from 8.30am, yoga teacher trainees require full concentration, as the dissection and investigation of every part of the Asanas is covered. It is the responsibility of the student to delegate enough time in the morning, at least 2.5 hours before theoretical class begins, to their own practice so that both mind and body are alert and sharp for the remainder of the day. Additionally, during these morning and afternoon group sessions, the students learn how to analyse physical (body) and mental (mind) issues by distinguishing irregular characteristics and misalignments in a person, and how these can be addressed. Yoga teacher trainee students are taught the sequence of important asanas, the common and not so common mistakes in the postures are identified and corrected. Along with these, presentation of self is imparted to the students - which includes all the aspects of body language, appropriate use of voice and the art of creating a positive atmosphere and waking up trust and respect in their students. Graduating from HIYC & the Internship Programme After these 2 first parts of the Intensive Course and the Pedagocical part of the Teachers Training Course, the internship program follows. Interns are advised to stay for a minimum of 4 weeks following the yoga teacher training programme, and preferably, 2-3 years of continuous professional training is expected under the supervision of our master and/or his most experienced teachers. This time gives the necessary understanding of the various body cases of the students and how to apply therapeutics.
