  1. Hardware As A Service – A Requirement For The Modern Business In the fast-changing environment of IT and related fields, it is important to keep track of what your organisation’s needs are and to then make sure you are pulling out all the stops to ensure that you run a successful operation. In terms of IT, no manager or business ownercan afford not to consider the impact of HaaS on their business’s success. WHAT IS HaaS? In short: it refers to ‘Hardware- as-a-Service’ which is a method or model that companies use to acquire hardware that they do not buy and therefore do not own; instead, such hardware belongs to another party, often referred to as the‘Managed Service Provider’ or MSP. This MSP enters into a contract with the company that rents their hardware, in terms of which said hardware is installed at the customer’s premises, with a contract stipulating the responsibilities of both parties. RESPONSIBILITIES The MSP, i.e. the service that makes their hardware available to companies that need the equipment but do not buy their own (for whatever reason) remains the owner of any such hardware and assumes all responsibility for maintenance, break/fix scenarios and replacement should that become necessary. It is mentioned too that, depending on the contract between the parties, the MSP should replace, from time to time, antiquated or old hardware, or such hardware that no longer serves the purposes of the company that hires such equipment. Of the company that rents the hardware it is expected that they shall pay on due date the amount in rent as stipulated and that they shall do nothing that shows an irresponsible attitude in terms of how they physically handle the rented hardware. WHY WOULD COMPANIES USE THE HaaS MODEL? The main reason for companies to consider the HaaS model is the fact that you have access to all of the IT services you require, with only limited responsibility. It is often a great solution for companies’ short-term needs as far as their hardware complementgoes because it gives them time to consider budget should they consider acquiring the hardware on an ownership basis, and is often a great solution in terms of which companies need certain hardware only at certain times of the year. Think of busy periods such as the holidays, Christmas and Easter, if that is when your company’s IT hardware needs reach a peak period, for example.

  2. This flexibility makes HaaS an attractive option for many companies that use the model. So, when ownership and long-term use are hard to justify, HaaS is often the answer. Other instances when HaaS is the preferred option refer to, for example, migration of services, test projects and training. For training purposes certain hardware is helpful and even essential, but the rest of the time the equipmentmay be under-utilised, for example, making HaaS the ideal solution. EXPECTATIONS The client will, and should, expect from the MSP the following: that they will build and/or install systems at their (i.e.the client’s) site and maintain them for the duration of the rental agreement. Preparations can be done off-site before the installation with the MSP pre- configuring all specifications and systems so that it is ready for installation at the customer’s premises. This means that the MSP does all preparatory work ahead of installation so that no time is lost unnecessarily. Ongoing support 24/7 should be part of any such agreement so that the client is always assured of professional service. BENEFITS HaaSoffers several benefits to the company that makes use of this service: it saves costs and reduces the risk of ownership among the most important reasons to consider it.
