Lightning surge protection devices are more than Accessories https://www.lightningprotection.com/
Do you know the electrical surges generated by lightning produce voltage spikes powerful enough to overload and damage any appliance plugged into an electrical outlet? Lightning-related damage costs billions of dollars. Apart from lightning strikes, there are other ways electrical surges can occur, such as: - When utility companies turn on the power supply - Damaged or downed power lines - When heavy electrical equipment such as motors, start up
Lightning Surge Protective Devices are devices that are used to protect a system from voltage spikes. It’s an umbrella term that is used to represent any protective device used for overvoltage protection. SPD is designed to limit transient overvoltage and divert current waves to earth, to limit the amplitude of this overvoltage to a value which is not dangerous for the electrical installations and switchgears. According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), a surge arrester is defined as: "A protective device for limiting surge voltages by discharging or bypassing surge current, and it also prevents the flow of current while remaining capable of repeating these functions".
Things to remember: • SPD is not an accessory • Surges are fairly common • They are not over current devices • They are an integral part of a Lightning protection system • Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs provide permanent protection from Surges
Features of a lightning surge protection device • how quickly the component reacts when the surge threshold is surpassed • Voltage protection rating or the let-through voltage i.e. the amount of voltage the component allows reaching the connected equipment. • The peak value of a current that can be conducted through the SPD with a wave shape, also known as Nominal Discharge Current • Joule rating is the most important feature that you should check on while buying a surge protection device. It’s basically the measure of energy absorption or energy dissipation of the surge protector. It is given in Joules (J). -
Thumb rules for choosing SPDs • Familiarise yourself with types, or category • Access the risk of lightning strikes and discharge capacity • Choose an SPD with a protective circuit breaker Lightning Eliminators offer a comprehensive range of lightning surge protection devices. Our patents and standards differentiate us from other and help protect your investments in electronic systems.
