  1. Be Careful What You Feed Your Pet: Alarming Concerns to Look Out For in Pet Food Have you ever thought about what your pet’s bowl of food encompasses? Are all the ingredients suitable and nutritious? Growing Powerhouse: The pet food industry serves our pets' nutritional needs and is a huge global market. It includes creating, manufacturing, promoting, and distributing different pet food items. The most common products sold are dry kibble, wet food, treats and raw food. Due to several factors such as higher disposable income, increasing ownership of pets, pet humanisation and growing consciousness of pet nutrition the pet food industry is rapidly rising. A well-balanced diet is crucial for a pet’s growth. Pets thrive on a meal with protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. Dogs are carnivorous and feed on meat, organs, vegetables and fruits. Scientific backing: Researchers looked into the possible significance of the increasingly popular "raw meat-based diets (RMBDs)" as reservoirs and human and pet infection hazards for bacteria including Salmonella sp. and pathogenic Escherichia coli in a recent study published in the journal Eurosurveillance. In contrast to traditional pet food, which is mostly heated or mechanically processed through different phases (cooking, extrusion, grinding, and dehydration), raw or barely cooked RMBDs are sold and frequently eaten. (link RMBD- https://www.news-medical.net/news/20240505/Raw-meat-based-diet- for-pets-linked-to-drug-resistant-bacteria-prompting-concerns-over-public-health- risks.aspx ) In light of recent events, we know of several concerns associated with processed dog food. 1.Ingredients: It’s crucial to read, understand and comprehend the ingredients present on pet food labels. Phrases such as "meat by-products" may be deceptive. These are leftover scraps with little nutritional value rather than excellent pieces of beef. In the same way, "fillers" like wheat or corn could offer calories but are deficient in vital elements. Concerned pet parents must also be on the lookout for any other allergens. a.Wheat gluten: To artificially boost the protein level of wheat gluten, melamine may be added. Ammelide, ammeline, and cyanuric acid are examples of co- contaminants of melamine, which are the end product of incomplete reactions during melamine synthesis. There are facilities dedicated to the synthesis of chemicals for the manufacture of melamine. Due to their massive nature, they are frequently found in industrial zones. A different chemical component called urea is heated under pressure to produce melamine.

  2. b.Lead chromate contamination may be present in turmeric, which brightens the colour. c.Honey: Honey contains colouring and corn syrup that may be harmful and provoke allergies. d.Preservatives: BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) & BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) and Ethoxyquin have caused dogs’ stomach concerns. e.Xylitol: This artificial sweetener is poisonous to dogs and can result in liver failure, a sharp drop in blood sugar, or even death. 2.Ethical concerns: Some pet owners have ethical reservations about using products from factory farms or unsustainable practices. The emphasis on reasonably priced pet food may push manufacturers to utilise less expensive, lower-quality ingredients. Taking charge: A healthy pet is a happy pet. Pet parents can make informed decisions and enhance their pets’ overall growth. Some suggestions would be: a.Reputable brands: Detective pet parents may thoroughly research a brand that has high-quality ingredients and transparent labelling. b.Kibble may not be your dog’s best friend but veterinarian-approved homemade diets or wet dog food can. Wet dog food can be stored for up to 12 months without refrigeration, providing your dog with a healthy, balanced and nutritious meal. Beyond this blog: In addition, pet parents may consult their partner in pet health, their veterinarian, for the best advice. To ensure your pet gets the happiness they deserve, we must be updated about the latest advancements as the pet food industry is rapidly growing. Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for the next masterpiece that will elaborate on why wet dog food is better than home-cooked food.
