  1. Human Body Systems Chapter 1

  2. Circulatory Digestive Endocrine Excretory Immune Muscular Nervous Reproductive Respiratory Skeletal Skin Carries needed material to and waste away from the body Takes in food, breaks it down, & absorbs nutrients Controls many regulatory processes by mean of chemicals Removes waste Fights disease Enables the body to move (voluntary & involuntary motion) Detects and interprets information from the environment outside the body and from within the body Produces sex cells & controls male & female characteristics Supports the body, protects it and works with muscles to allow movement Protects the body, keeps water inside the body & regulates body temperature What's My Function?

  3. Human Body Introduction Life Science: HumanBiology. Discovery Channel School. 2002. unitedstreaming. 18 April 2006 <http://www.unitedstreaming.com/>

  4. Organ Systems in the Human Body • What is an organ? • An organ is a structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue that performs a specific job • What is an organ system? • How many organ systems are in the human body? • eleven organsystems • Read the table: organ systems in the human body (p.21)

  5. Organ Formation Basics of Biology, The: The Human Body: Organ Systems Working Together. United Learning. 1993. unitedstreaming. 18 April 2006 <http://www.unitedstreaming.com/>

  6. Activity • Divided into groups of four students • Each team will be responsible for categorizing / classifying the given terms • Given tabs with word(s) & phrases each team will group the appropriate terms together: body system – function (s) – organs • When you believe you have the correct answers: • Raise your hand • Your choices will be checked • Incorrect term tabs will be pulled out • Each team will have ONLY two more opportunities to get the correct answer by reclassifying the terms

  7. Goals • 1st team to finish categorizations correctly WINS!!! • One person from each team pick up a pack of terms/phrases • Learn the body systems, organs, & functions • ??? Any QUESTIONS ???

  8. Creating Foldable • Fold two pieces of paper separately “hot dog” style (vertically in half) to make a center crease • Open up and fold each outside edge (right & left) inward to the center crease • Still closed with flaps facing up, fold the paper in half “hamburger style” (top to bottom) • Open up the last fold & fold the top edge over 1/3 of the way to the newly made center crease & fold a second time to meet the center crease/ do the same from the bottom (when opened back up it should be divided into 12 sections, six on the right & left)

  9. Foldable • 1stsection should say • left side –Body • right side – Systems • Inside– list all of the body systems • 2nd section • left side – Circulatorysystem / Cardiovascular system (p.100) • right side – sketch of system • Inside (left two sections)- heart, arteries, capillaries, veins, & blood • inside (right two sections)–function: carries needed substances to cells and carries waste products away from cells

  10. Circulatory System p.100 Human Body Systems: The Circulatory System. United Learning. 1997. unitedstreaming. 18 April 2006 <http://www.unitedstreaming.com/>

  11. Digestive System • 3 rdsection • left side – Digestive System (p. 82) • right side – sketch of system • Inside - Mouth, epiglottis, salivary gland, esophagus, liver, gallbladder, stomach, large intestine, pancreas, small intestine, rectum • Inside –breaks down food into molecules that the body can use to absorb into blood & carry throughout the body, also wastes are eliminated from the body

  12. Digestive System p. 82 Body Systems. Discovery Channel School. 2002. unitedstreaming. 18 April 2006 <http://www.unitedstreaming.com

  13. Endocrine System • 4th section • left side – Endocrine System (p.226) • Right side – draw a sketch of system • Inside - Hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, thymus, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries/testes • inside – controls many of the body’s daily activities as well as long-term changes such as development
