Types of Monitors • CRT and LCD monitors are commonly used for computer monitor display today. • (PDP) Plasma Display Panel are uncommonly used as a computer monitor and mainly used for television use. • Video projectors are widely used for conference room presentations, classroom training, and home theatre applications.
Most popular • CRT monitors used to be the monitor everyone used and people still use them today. They are cheaper and work well. • LCD monitors are probably the monitors that people are starting to use more often today. LCD monitors are getting cheaper and companies are starting to make good quality monitors.
Most expensive (PDP) Plasma Display Panel would have to be the most expensive monitor out on the market for computer use. The reason why they are so expensive is because they are huge and have pretty good picture quality. Plasma’s can also be used as television screens.
CRT CRT monitors generate picture when electrons strike the fluorescent screen, light is emitted. The electron beam is deflected and modulated in a way which causes it to display an image on the screen. Can display resolutions as low as 320×200 and on flat-screen CRT monitor they can display resolutions as high as 1920 x 1440 maximum resolution A higher refresh rate is better, because lower refresh rates cause screen flicker. A monitor with at least a 75-Hz refresh rate at a given resolution will generally provide flicker-free performance, and on CRT monitors you can adjust the refresh rate by going into monitor settings, there is no set refresh rate on CRT monitors. CRT monitors are measured by diagonally across, for example most 19-inch CRT monitors are between 17.9 and 18.1 inches Measured in millimeters, dot pitch is the space between two phosphors of the same color. Generally, the smaller the dot pitch, the better. A dot pitch of 0.22 - 0.27 mm is likely to provide a clearer image than a dot pitch of 0.28 mm or higher. CRT monitors cost less, although LCD prices have come down significantly. Street prices of 19-inch CRT monitors range between $180 and $250. Street prices of 17-inch CRT monitors range between $100 to $150. For comparison , 17-inch LCD monitors average around $200, while better 19-inch LCD monitors will average around $250-$300. Cutaway rendering of a color CRT: 1. Electron guns 2. Electron beams 3. Focusing coils 4. Deflection coils 5. Anode connection 6. Mask for separating beams for red, green, and blue part of displayed image 7. Phosphor layer with red, green, and blue zones 8. Close-up of the phosphor-coated inner side of the screen
LCD LCD monitor image is generated from crystals that are in liquid form. Because they are in a liquid form they are easily manipulable, and this allows us to play with the way that light interacts with them. LCD monitors have a native-supported resolution for best display effect. Displaying other resolutions requires conversion & interpolation, which often degrades image quality. LCD monitors, response time refers to how quickly a liquid crystal can twist, then untwist to either pass or block the light of each pixel. The faster the crystals can react, the faster the motion that can be displayed on screen. This is why a low response time is essential for applications like movies and games to be watchable without ghosting. Ghosting is the remnants of the old frame image 'below' the new frame image due to the fact that not all the crystals have updated with the new frame in time to display it. Any response time below 16ms is fast enough for the eye to perceive full motion, and today's displays of 8, 4 and even 2 milliseconds will all provide a great viewing experience. LCD monitors are measured with the width of the screen, including the outside part of the screen. The dot pitch of a LCD monitor is the distance between the centers of two adjacent pixels. The smaller the dot pitch size, the less granularity is present, resulting in a sharper image. Dot pitch may be the same both vertically and horizontally. As an individual one-time purchase an LCD monitor is going to be more expensive. Throughout a lifetime, however, LCDs are cheaper as they are known to have a longer lifespan and also a lower power consumption. The cost of both technologies have come down over the past few years, and LCDs are reaching a point where smaller monitors are within many consumers' price range.
Plasma Plasma display is generated when many tiny cells located between two panels of glass hold an inert mixture of noble gases (neon and xenon). The gas in the cells is electrically turned into a plasma which then excites phosphors to emit light. Since PDP is mostly used as a television display the effective on-screen picture is set at 720×576(480) to 680×550(450) The set refresh rate used for most televisions including plasma’s are set at 100mhz. Plasma monitors can also burn in due to the fact that the phosphor compounds which emit the light lose their luminosity with use. As a result, when certain areas of the display are used more frequently than others, over time the lower luminosity areas become visible to the naked eye and the result is called burn-in. Plasma monitors cost a lot of money and just are not the best monitors to use for computers. They are pretty Impractical due to there size and how much they cost. Therefore since plasmas are large in size, if you were to buy a brand new one, it would cost probably well over 1k.
Video Projector Video projectors takes a video signal and projects the corresponding image on a projection screen using a lens system. All video projectors use a very bright light to project the image, and most modern ones can correct any curves, blurriness, and other inconsistencies through manual settings. Common display resolutions for a portable projector include SVGA (800×600 pixels), XGA (1024×768 pixels), 720p (1280×720 pixels), and 1080p (1920×1080 pixels). Video projectors and movie projectors are a bit different in refresh rates but movie projectors advance from one frame to the next 24 times each second. But each frame is illuminated twice or three times before the next frame is projected using a shutter in front of its lamp. As a result, the movie projector runs at 24 frames per second, but has a 48 or 72 Hz refresh rate. The size of a video projector relies on how large of a surface your projecting your image onto. The costs of video projector range from the $1000-$4000.
Multi Monitors Microsoft describes this setup as "one of the best ways to improve your productivity" Video output on a computer is generated by a video card and is interpreted and displayed by a variety of devices. Video cards are typically connected to a monitor (of either the CRT or LCD type), however they are increasingly being connected to projection equipment or television sets. As a result of this trend, manufacturers have produced video cards which can connect to several types of display devices using the appropriate interface. A video card that has two sockets on it (for two monitor cables) is referred to as Dual Head. Two separate video cards are just as acceptable, and so is using the motherboard video socket plus a second video card.
Large and Wide monitors This is a picture of a 65” plasma HDTV which can be used also as a computer monitor. Sharp made the world’s largest professional LCD monitor, which measures at 65”. The suggested price is $31,995.
