FDCA Symposium Breakout Session Leah Arnold FDCA Core Team February 28, 2005 Data Collection Software Applications
2010 Data Collection Software Applications • Scope • Requirements • Challenges • 2004/2006 Software Applications • Questions & Answers
Field Data Collection Automation Scope • FDCA program consists of automation resources, applications, and infrastructure necessary to support field data collection operations in the 2010 Census including: • Office automation at RCCs and LCOs; • A secure mobile computing environment for about 500,000 field workers; • Communications services linking together field workers, office staff, and Census headquarters; • Interfaces to other census systems.
Field Data Collection Automation • Census, Quality Control/Reinterview & Coverage Measurement Operations • Data Collection, Administrative & Training Applications • Paper & Electronic Collection Methods • Housing Unit & Other Living Quarters • Urban, Rural and Remote Areas • Field Office & Field Worker Applications • Physical & System Security • FDCA Deliverables, FDCA Interfaces and Government Provided
Data Collection Software Applications Scope • FDCA Deliverables are applications that you design, develop and support. • FDCA Interfaces require that you design, develop and support interfaces between FDCA deliverables or between government provided applications and FDCA deliverables. • Government Provided Systems require that you make them available to the required users.
FDCA Deliverables Field Office Operations Control System Government Provided Systems/Data - The government provides software applications and FDCA provides the hardware on which to run the applications. - Input from government provided systems is required by FDCA deliverables. - Output from FDCA deliverables is required by government provided systems. Government’s Expectationsby contracting with Industry… • “the Challenge” • When automating the field worker environment, the complexity associated with automation must not be realized by about 500,000 temporary field workers. • When automating the office environment, the complexity associated with automation must not be realized by about 30,000 office workers.
2004/2006 Software Applications • 2004 Operations Control System (OCS) Functionality Overview– Lucy Baird, Team Leader for the Planning and Implementation Team, TMO • 2004 Handheld Software: Assignment Management & Short Form– Jean Sebold, Team Leader for the Decennial Development Team, TMO • 2006 Listing & Mapping Software Overview– Beverly Davis, Project Manager, Geography Division; Kevin Donnalley, GPS Task Manager, Geography Division • These presentations represent the BOC approach and do not dictate a particular design or implementation approach for 2010.
