  1. What are the Do’s and Don’ts After a Hernia Surgery

  2. Recovery after hernia operation in Mumbai is just about being in tune with the body’s natural healing process. It is important that you listen to your doctor or surgeon and follow the instructions. A hernia is lot more common that we think. In some patients the hernia pops in and out without much pain, but for some, the pain can be unbearable. Hernia repair surgery is important because in some cases it becomes necessary for surgery so it is important have an surgery.

  3. Hernia occurs when a portion of our organ starts pushing through a weak spot or a tear in the abdominal wall muscles. This usually happens in the abdominal or groin area. Hernia surgery is required to push the organ back in the place. This operation is done using either of the two ways: open surgery or the laparoscopic surgery. The outcome of both is highly successful and most patients goes back to normal lifestyle in a few weeks after the surgery. Having said that, at the end of the day, it is a surgery and adequate post hernia surgery care is required by every patient to ensure full recovery. Here is a list of top five things that a patient should keep in mind for a faster and stress-free recovery: Rest but don’t become a recluse: Post hernia surgery one can go home within 24 to 48 hours depending on the clinical condition but it takes about a week to

  4. be able to get to routine activity. However, you should avoid heavy lifting at all costs till your doctor gives a go ahead. You don’t need to give up on regular walking, as it helps reduce musical stiffness and increase blood circulation. Avoid exertion and any actions that put pressure on the abdominal area like- coughing, straining at passing urine or stools, rigorous exercising, lifting very heavy weights etc. Use a western toilet: Pain and swelling is common after hernia surgery and it is advisable that the patient uses western toilet to make it easier to pass stools without straining any muscle. Squatting in Indian toilets can increase the pressure on the abdomen. After about six weeks of the surgery one can go back to using an Indian or western toilet if they feel up to it. Invest in some expandable waistband clothing: This will give adequate support to the incision site and make it comfortable for you to move around.

  5. Plan your diet to include fibre and water: There are usually no restrictions on diet post hernia surgery. You can consume normal diet but for a few weeks after surgery include low fat, high fibre diet and drink plenty of water. Since hernia operation is done for recovery of muscle strength it is necessary that you include high protein in your diet. Fibre and good water intake are needed to keep constipation at bay. Take good care of the incision: The surgeon will place adhesives over the incision site to protect it and improve healing. Don’t try to pull or tug on the adhesive or stitch and make sure that the area remains dry. If you notice any blood or pus coming out then call your doctor immediately. Remember that hernia recovery is not a race. Let your body heal through the natural process and consult your surgeon on how best you can take care of yourself.
