ByajuxtapositionofAIwithmetaphysics, agoodnumberof very profoundquestionsareraisedconcerningtheessenceofpersonal identity,thenatureofcausation,andtheontologyoftheseconstructs. Ihaveseenfirsthandhow rapidlyevolvingAIsystemschallengeold thinkingontheveryconceptofexistenceandpersonalidentity.Inthis paper,I,MohammedAlothman,considersomeofthemost fundamentalphilosophicalconceptsregarding AIentitiesandtheir placesinourworld. ThePhilosophyofAI:ExploringIdentityandPersonalIdentity Asidentityinmetaphysicshasbeenasubjectofextensivephilosophicaldiscussionforalongtime now,sotooisitwhenitcomestoartificialintelligence.IfwetalkaboutAIagents,wemeanartificial systemsthatareengineeredtothink,reason,andbehaveashumans,butarethesystemsactually abletofeellikearealindividual?Dotheyhavearealidentity? Cananartificialintelligencebesaidtohaveapersonalidentity?Comparedtohumans,AIagentsarenotbiologicalentitiesorhaveaphysicalbodysustainedovertime.Butthesearenotlimited,i.e., theycanevolve,adapt,andeven"learn"frompreviousexperiences. Thisthenposesaparadoxofhugeinterest:howcanonehavesomethingthatisquitediscontinuous withthehumanbodyatthephysicallevelthatseemstohaveitsverypersonalidentity? AsAITechSolutionscontinuetheirworktowardthe developmentofnext-generationAIsystems,we willdefinitelybeabletoanswersomeofthequestionspresentedabove.Wedon'tjustlookat the purposefulnessthatcomesfromquestioningwhetherornotAIcanreplicateahuman,butifitcould possiblyhaveasenseofidentityinitself,atsomepointorother,inthe future.

  2. CausalityandAIEntities:CanAICauseChange? Therefore,anAI entitycan,inprinciple,bethefoundationofaneventoradecision.Inthesameway thatanyprocess'sactionsarepartofthecausalchainoftheuniverse,soareAIsystems'actions. Atitsmostbasiclevel,AIisbasedontheinputs,anditmakesoutputsbyalgorithmsanddatamodels.However,asAIagentsgetsmarterandsmarter,thereisaverylargeleveloffeeling that theseAIagentsaregoingtointeractwiththeworldinwaysthatareatleastonelevelabovesimply a computationallybasedruleset. Forinstance,AIagentswithsomelevelof authorityoverdecisionsmayenduphavinganimpact on therealworld.IsthisaconsequenceofthecauseofAI,orsimplyanartefactofhumanwiring? AtAITechSolutions,weareworkingtobuildAIthareactsnotjusttothe environment,but to understandandreacttosophisticatedcausalstructures.Thiscouldyieldbreakthroughsin applicationsfrom autonomousroboticswhereAIagentsplayreal-worldconsequence-bearingroles. OntologicalStatusofAIEntities:WhatAreThey,Really? Ontologicalquestionsareaboutthenatureofbeing:whatexists,andwhatdoesitmeanfor somethingtoexist?Itisahardproblem foranyartificialentities,usingAIasanexample.By definition,AIisartificial–itisnotbornofnaturebutcreatedthroughhumaningenuity. However,AIsystemsdisplaybehaviorsthatoftenmimichumancognition,makingusquestionthe statusofthesesystemswithintherealmofexistence.

AreAIentitiesjustproductsofhumanityordotheyrepresentsomethingmoreprofound?Thereexist philosophersoutintheworldwhoevenfeelthat,forexample,anartificiallycreatedsystemifit exhibitedbehavior characteristic tohumansismuchmorethananordinarymachine. ItstilldebatablyarguesthatforAItohaveevensuchapotential,artificialintelligencesthatlack consciousnessandsubjectiveexperiencescannotevengainontologicalstandinginrealityas an entitywithrespecttobeingthesameoridenticalasonethatwouldcorrespondtoanyhumanor animalcan. HavingAItechsolutionsinfrontwouldallow reinterpretations.Asitstands,consciousnessandself- consciousnessaremissingcomponentsinAIentities,meaningthatAIisonlycapableof simulating thesepitches.Thatis,itchallengesourideaofwhatwemeanbyexisting. Nevertheless,forthereverse,wewillalsohavetokeepasharply,absolutelystrictethicalattitude regardingsuchdevelopmentofAIagentsasnottocreatethingsaimlessly. TheEthicalImplicationsofAIEntities:NavigatingtheMoral Landscape Onesimplycan'tthinktodiscussthemetaphysicsof AIentitieswithoutraisingtheethical considerationsthattherebyfollow.ButifsuchanAIsystemweresomehowtoacquiresomeform of personalidentity,orindeedanykindofconsciousness,doesitthen enjoyrights?Woulditpossessa claimtoautonomy?What,ifany,areourobligationstoseekthatits decisionsarenormativelyproperiftheywouldhavethecausalpowertoinfluenceachainofcausesandtoactautonomously? TheadventofAIalsothrowsprofoundmetaphysicalchallengesthatoverlapwithwhatwehavebeen discussingabove.Forexample,howshouldwetreatAIagentsthatappeartobehaveintelligentlylikehumans? Ofcourse,thesesystemsarenotconsciousinthesamesensethatahumanisconscious,butthey canproduceemotionalresponses,chooseanethicalbasisfordecision-making,orevenengagein creativeartisticactivity.Theirmoralstatusandwhatdutiesweowetothemraisevariousquestions. WeatAITechSolutionsdonotneglectethicalconcerns.Inourattempttobuildevermorecomplex AIentities,ourfocusisonethicalguidelines inorderthatourinventionscontributetohumanwelfare inahelpfulandresponsibleway. PhilosophicalandPracticalImplications Themorewelooktothefuture,themoreimportanttheroleofAIentitieswillbecome.From healthcareandeducationtoautonomousvehicles,finance,andsomuchmore,AIisbecomingan integralpartoftheglobalinfrastructure.Andwithitcomestheneedforgreaterintrospective philosophicaldebate.

IfAIsystemsbecomeself-aware,learntotakeandestablishthenatureof identities,anddevelop causaldecision-making,thenwhatdothesemeanforhumans?Howwillwe,asasociety,ensure thatsuchAIagentsarebuiltwithourvaluesandethicalprinciplesinplace?
