Are Helical Gears More Expensive?

But are helical gears more expensive than other gearing systems? As experienced helical gear manufacturers we have to say that this is a more difficult question to answer than you might think. Helical gears are certainly more complex to manufacture than many other types of gear. In order for them to be effective they angles of the surface of the gear teeth must me measured and cut with incredible accuracy, which does increase the manufacturing costs.

  1. Are Helical Gears More Expensive?

  2. Helical gears are cut at an angle toward the face of the gear, and they have a number of advantages over their straight cut counterparts. • When in use helical gears are significantly less noisy because the way they are cut at an angle means that they transfer power slowly through the gear tooth. • This is one of the reasons that helical gears are used in automobile manufacture, but it is a property that makes them immensely useful in industrial machinery too.

  3. But are helical gears more expensive than other gearing systems? As experienced helical gear manufacturers we have to say that this is a more difficult question to answer than you might think. • Helical gears are certainly more complex to manufacture than many other types of gear. • In order for them to be effective they angles of the surface of the gear teeth must me measured and cut with incredible accuracy, which does increase the manufacturing costs.

  4. However, helical gears also bring with them a number of advantages. There is the noise reduction we have already alluded to, but there are a number of other practical benefits too. • At Highfield Gear, we understand helical gears, how they work, how they affect gearboxes and when it is most appropriate to use them. • This is why you should consider come straight to us for your gear manufacturing jobs. Our highly experienced engineering team will be more than happy to turn their expansive expertise and in-house manufacturing abilities to offer deliver the most appropriate and best quality gears.

  5. So when are helical gears the right, most cost effective choice? Well, certainly whenever efficiency is important. • The curved nature of the teeth of helical gears means that the surfaces of the teeth will always be in contact with the corresponding gear. • This constant contact means that levels of efficiency are very high, often achieving an efficiency of between ninety and ninety nine percent. • These incredibly high levels of efficiency are the main reason why helical gears are so often used. Efficiency reduces energy use, and in industrial gearboxes cutting energy use can save a great deal of expenditure. • Something to consider when wondering if helical gears are more expensive.

  6. Of course, this increased efficiency through constant contact does have consequences. • The constant contact between the curved teeth of the gears does lead to increased wear which in turn means that helical gears require more regular maintenance. • This can, however, be something of a benefit. Very few machines work well if their gearbox is not in optimal condition. • If you are regularly inspecting your helical gears for signs of wear you will also pick up other minor issues with the gearbox before they become major problems.

  7. As one of the leading helical gear manufacturers in the North of England, we would suggest that rather thinking about whether helical gears are more expensive it is better to think about whether helical gears are cost effective. We would argue that they most certainly are. • While the wear associated with their efficiency may necessitate slightly more frequent gearbox refurbishment, the benefits of that efficiency deliver so much you are likely to find that when looked at holistically helical gears are not really any more expensive than any other gearing system. • So all of the efficiency at no real extra cost? Helical gears really do seem to have no downsides.
