  1. Hysses.com COVID-19 Anxiety: How Effective Is Hand Sanitiser? Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the sale of hand sanitisers has soared. It has become the most sought- after product, with many countries even reporting shortages. But, is it really effective against this virus? Covid-19 or 2019 novel coronavirus is a new respiratory virus that causes flu-like illness ranging from mild to severe, with symptoms of fever, coughing, sore throat, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, kidney failure, and even death. The elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions are more at risk of becoming severely ill with the virus. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Covid-19 spreads through contact with respiratory droplets of an infected person. These droplets can reach the noses, mouths, or lungs of nearby people. If these droplets land on a surface, the transmission is possible by touching such objects or surfaces. Washing hands with warm water and soap remain the gold standard for hand hygiene and best defense against COVID-19. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, or having been in a public place. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is a good alternative. Other everyday precautions you can take are to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Cover your cough or sneeze with an elbow or tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Avoid crowds, especially in poorly ventilated spaces and stay home when you are sick. Hand sanitisers can help reduce your risk of catching certain infections, however, not all hand sanitisers are equally effective against COVID-19. There are two main types of hand sanitizers: alcohol-based and alcohol-free. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers contain varying amounts and types of alcohol, often between 60% and 95% and usually isopropyl, ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or n-propanol. Alcohol is known to be able to kill most germs. Hand sanitisers with no or less than 60 percent alcohol content will not be
