Session Initiation Protocol is a signalling protocol that helps to control interactive communication sessions.

Session Initiation Protocol or SIP is a signalling protocol. • SIP is used for initiating, modifying, maintaining and terminating real-time sessions that involve voice, video, messaging and other communications applications. • The main function of the SIP is to establish a session and afterwards end it when necessary.
Session Initial Protocol does not have any fixed media type. • SIP supports the major authentication and encryptions. • SIP does not depend on the lower-layer transport protocol. This, in turn, enables it to associate with the new transport protocol.
User Agent: It initiates, modifies or terminates a session through devices. • Proxy Server: It takes a request from a user agent and forward it to another user. • Registrar Server: It accepts registration requests from user agents. • Redirect Server: This server generates 3xx redirection responses. • Gateway: Its function is to interconnect a SIP network to other networks.
VoIP or voice over internet protocol is one of the best forms of telecommunications. • VoIP is a communication protocol which enables one to send voice over the internet. • SIP is the signalling protocol that establishes, modifies and terminates multimedia sessions like VoIP Calls. • Both SIP and VoIP create the foundation of IP technology.
VoIP is a combination of other technologies and is used within the present day telecommunication network. On the other hand, SIP is used within VoIP. • While VoIP majorly focuses on voice, SIP deals in all forms of media including voice. • SIP is able to handle large amounts of data and traffic, while on the other hand, VoIP hosts traffic from one single network.
