  1. VoIP Call is undoubtedly the best and the cheapest means of telecommunication. • VoIP or Voice over internet Protocol is a form of internet telephony. • VoIP call comprises of 3 elements: the sender, the IP network and the receiver.

  2. IP Devices: Computers, laptops and similar devices are also compatible with making VoIP Calls with an internet connection. • Media Gateways: The media gateway connects the IP network to the PSTN and allows those 2 networks to connect. • Softswitch: Softswitch uses established protocol and ensures that the information is communicated between the gateways. A softswitch is more important to the VoIP Service Provider, than an end user. • IP PBX: This helps in switching calls between VoIP users and users on local lines while allowing all users to share a certain number of external phone lines

  3. Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA): ATA allows one to connect a standard phone to a computer or to an internet connection, for use with VoIP.  • IP Phones: IP Phones have an Ethernet connector and all the necessary hardware and software to handle IP Calls. • Computer to Computer: Software, microphone, speaker and internet connection is required to make a computer-to-computer free VoIP Call.

  4. VoIP Calls use the packet switched network instead of circuit switched network. • In the packet switched network the terminal splits up the information into blocks of moderate size called packets. • The packets move in the network, from the source to the receiving end.

  5. After leaving the source, the packet goes to the first node or router in this communication network. • The router examines the header on receiving the packet and forwards the packet to the next appropriate routes. • The process of “store and forward” goes on till the packet reaches its destination. • After reaching the destination, the terminal at that point removes the header and obtains the actual data which originated at the source.
