Overview Menthol also called peppermint camphor, terpene alcohol is an organic compound synthetically made or obtained from peppermint or other mint oils. It also occurs naturally in mint plants. Menthol acts as a coolant, stimulates cold receptors, and is frequently used to relieve minor pain, irritation and to prevent infection. Menthol is a waxy, crystalline substance, clear or white in color. It has strong minty herbal odor derived from Mentha oil. It is solid at room temperature and melts slightly above. Today, in addition to its medicinal qualities, the mint plant offers its menthol properties to many sweets, and even to mouthwash, cigarettes and culinary creations. In the US, half of menthol consumption is for mentholated cigarettes. Nigeria and the Philippines are said to be the only other countries whose inhabitants smoke menthol cigarettes. For the remainder of the world, menthol is consumed primarily in toothpaste, mouthwash and analgesic balms, with 20 percent going into peppermint flavoring. Globally, India is the largest producer and exporter of Menthol Flakes. The other major producers In the world are China, Brazil, and Japan. Out of total global production of Menthol flakes India contributes around 73%, China 18% and others 9%. The major exports are directed to countries like China, France, Germany, Japan etc. About 50% of total Menthol flakes production is exported to China, whereas menthol crystals are exported to US and European countries.
