ow many times have you thought that getting real-time H Many times I bet! I am sure you have thought about it at least once. action, real time data and real time outcomes would be a great idea for your organization and its employees? The intent of providing real time intelligence is what was the founding principle behind Total Communicator Solutions, Inc. and thepatented Spark Compass platform for platforms. In an interview with Insights Success, Erik Bjontegard, the Founder of Total Communicator Solutions, Inc and inventor of the Spark Compass platform describes the inception story of the organization. Below are the highlights of the interview between Erik Bjontegard and Insights Success: Give a brief overview of your company, its uniqueness and its vision. Total communicator Solutions Inc. was created to build a platform that leverages technology to deliver actions in the real world based on data. Leveraging the ability to capture data from a variety of sensors and connected devices such as mobile phones, cars, digital displays and smart city sensors, the platform applies augmented intelligence by combining historical data and known demographic data to deliver information, instructions and curated content to the right person at the right time and place, on the right device. Combining cutting-edge technologies with new communication protocols delivering actions on data and measuring the real-world outcomes, the platform combines legacy systems with next- generation technologies in one platform for platforms. This unique approach to act on data - real-time - delivers a new way to bridge the physical world with the digital. We are staying true to this unique mission, delivering better outcomes in the real world based on data from the real world – in real time. This is not just a vision, it is being done in the real world real-time with our patented platform for platforms, Spark Compass. Creating real-world outcomes based on real-world data. Can you describe your company’s cutting edge IoT solutions which address all the needs of your customers? Our platform is leveraging a variety of edge devices as well as IoT sensors, combining these with any type of communication protocol, from low-power wide area network into the future of 5G and beyond. These devices are connected with a central computation device in the cloud to deliver actions on the events that are captured in the real world. Combining this with the knowledge base – demographic data on the user, information about the location, the user’s activity – as well as an understanding of the desired outcomes for the operator of the system, enables the system to deliver “curated content”, information and actions back into the real world. By measuring the resulting outcomes, a virtual real- world machine learning communication platform is created. This
10IoT Disruptors Most Innovative The of 2019 is our patented and truly unique approach; while others are providing powerful analytics - even apply AI - onto data that is gathered, we are unique in that we create actions based on the data that can be sent back into the real world. We measure the outcomes to verify that these meet the desired outcomes or not, and learn from it to improve next communications. This feedback loop enables a truly intelligent system. We call this “augmented intelligent” communication protocols for our clients, basically providing the “intelligence of everything”. Our How did you end up doing this? I grew up in Norway, and later went to England on a scholarship to study mechanical engineering. While in Norway working on underwater robotics, I decided to set my eyes to the skies and the space and later I came to the US in order to work on the space shuttle with NASA. platform turns the data into actions. Having a wonderful and understanding family who supported me in chasing my dreams, helped me in creating a reality around my vision. I had a great team to help build the platform based on my invention. Being based in San Diego and having worked with Qualcomm as an executive in their corporate R&D division, I recognized the platform had a global reach – so we are now travelling the globe working with partners in countries from Hong Kong to Manchester, Oslo to Bangkok. With the escalating number of IoT solutions providers, how is your company driving to create an impact on its customers? Unlike lot of companies that are focusing on great marketing materials and ideas presented in PowerPoint presentations, we believe in doing rather than talking. Our solutions have been deployed, tested, validated and endorsed by the largest and the greatest technology companies in the world. Always looking for ways to do better, we also take pride in making sure there is value in what we do. We always have answer to “what’s in it for me” from the end-user or our customer’s perspective. Delivering actions on data is a patented version beyond the advanced analytics that others are doing. We combine technologies from partners, whether it’s augmented reality, or smart city sensors, edge computing or indeed others AI algorithms; we combine these into one platform to deliver real-world outcomes. By combining other’s technologies, other’s equipment, other’s sensors and other’s solutions, we build a true platform for platforms. And now we are also able to store our data in a very effective and fast blockchain for those customers who want that option – real world data on events, stored real time on a blockchain. We are even reaching peaks at 5,000 transactions per second on our blockchain! We are always looking for better outcomes and match desired outcomes and hence, we don’t build technology for technology sake, we build it to deliver results.
What are the challenges faced while providing solutions and how is your company serving to tackle them? Being a cutting-edge company and a market leader has been a challenge. When I formed the company in 2012, nobody knew that 5G would one day become a reality; in-fact nobody knew about 5G at all. I knew about it as I was part of the team developing it at Qualcomm. I knew that one day there will be the ability to connect devices and people in the real world with the digital in a manner where connectivity would be near instantaneous. Soon after having helped bring Augmented Reality into reality and the market, I left. I recognized that one day there will be a need for a common control system, a common “brain” if you’d like, so there will be a need to have a platform for platforms. It is only recently that this kind of thinking has been understood. It’s only recently that this kind of solutions are being recognized as even possible. So building this, and showcasing it has been a painstaking approach over the last 8 years. By presenting cutting-edge solutions, we always are painting the picture of what can be done, the end solution – the blue horizon and the amazing future we can create. There are no limits to what our platform can do when you really think about the aspect of gathering real world data, understand it, and act on it to deliver better outcomes…. However it’s important to start somewhere and in order to start we often have to start small. We always percent the end goal so that every step goes towards building the complete solution, not piecemeal by piecemeal of solutions that do not cooperate, collaborate nor can communicate with each other. The essences of building intelligently is that the first step is the first step towards the future. In order to do so, the future we want to create needs to be known. In order to create a road map, we need to know where we want to end up. Real-time edge analytic platform that allows for collaboration of data from any system through utilization of our patented, system agnostic, contextual intelligence technology. engagements for up-and-coming sports teams and leagues as well as the world top leading soccer teams, our platform delivers outcomes in the real world that can be measured, repeated and thereby improving everyone’s lives. What according to you could be the potential future of IoT industry and how does your company envision sustaining its competency? I believe that the IoT industry will evolve and IoT will become something that is deployed and integrated seamlessly everywhere. It should not be a standalone industry. It should not be a standalone word. For it to fully succeed IoT should be integrated everywhere and into the real world. We call our app interface the User Interface to the real world. The UI to the real world that controls digital interactions in the physical world. That should be the true goal for IoT, the intersection between the physical and the digital and providing the bridge between the two. By always being visionaries continuing to innovate and acknowledging that a true platform for platform will never be completed we know that not only will we be future proof, we will continue to sustain a leading-edge and hence our competent competency will be a world leading. How are you leveraging cutting-edge technologies from multiple entities? Leveraging cutting-edge technologies from multiple entities and companies into one common platform for platforms, we as a company are now poised to explosive growth. Having teamed up with world leading technology partners, we are now teaming up with world leading content owners, distributors and technology leaders in new markets. Expanding beyond USA, North America and Europe into Southeast Asia, China, Middle East and North Africa our platform can deliver outcomes that can change and improve lives across the globe. This technology and our ability to grow with new technologies, storing data safely and securely, ensuring we protect everybody’s privacy, we can truly deliver better outcomes. Whether we are caring for senior citizens on the West Coast of England using Alexa and our augmented intelligence platform, or helping travelers discover the beauty of remote areas of Malaysia or Thailand, or improving fan Give us a few testimonials of your clients that accurately highlight your company’s position in the market. One of our airport clients stated our technology works flawlessly and was cutting-edge it was just ahead of its time. A sports and University client is saying that our platform doesn’t need an introduction as the results it generates stands for itself.

Rising Mobile Workforce and its Challenges in the Mobile-Cloud Era: Data & Endpoint Management M enterprises around the world. In turn, enterprise IT departments are facing new management and security challenges as the amount of business data soars and the number of endpoints explodes. The question that is doing the rounds is what IT teams need to consider to manage and secure their businesses in this new era. obility and cloud computing are rapidly becoming the norm for Industry analysts predict deep penetration of enterprise mobility by the year 2020. IDC, for instance, forecasts Mathivanan V Vice President ManageEngine 16 | September 2019 www.insightssuccess.com
Industry Insider that mobile workers will account for almost 75 percent of the total workforce in the U.S. Meanwhile, Strategy Analytics projects that the global mobile workforce will reach 1.75 billion users and account for 42 percent of the global workforce overall. More troubling, the typical end user has little knowledge of those threats or their ramifications. The result is more users are more likely to leak enterprise data by using compromised websites and rogue online services. The CVE listed 14,712 cybersecurity vulnerabilities for 2017 and has already listed 2,848 for the first two months of 2018. In response, vendors large and small are releasing patches on a daily basis. Enterprise IT teams clearly need to focus on endpoint security management to ensure business success in the mobile-cloud era. necessary mobile device management software before they are given to end users. Devices that are not appropriately managed are security risks, so no business application should be installed or run on them. Related to the day-one management challenge is updating endpoints that are on the go, anytime and anywhere. IT teams must be able to install critical patches while employees are traveling, commuting, or otherwise offsite. The economic perspective is just as bright as a button. The global enterprise mobility market will be worth as much as $140 billion, predicts the National Association of Software and Services Companies. And the investments are paying off. To date, 84 percent of all companies who consider themselves on the cutting edge of mobility report an increase in overall productivity as a direct result of incorporating mobile apps into their business, according to a survey by AppsFreedom. Data leakage presents yet another security challenge for IT teams to overcome. Data leakage can happen with or without the users’ knowledge. For instance, users may knowingly copy business data to a USB device or upload it to a cloud storage service. They may also unknowingly expose that data to a public cloud service when using third-party apps such as document viewers and predictive keyboard apps. Such apps may compromise user IDs and passwords, account numbers, and other sensitive enterprise data by exposing it to public cloud services. Endpoint security challenges Keeping endpoints up to date with the latest versions of their OSes and applications has become a full-time job, one that is getting harder to perform in the mobile enterprise. A growing challenge is the diversity of endpoint operating systems that must be managed, including Android, iOS, MacOS, Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS. For each, the IT team must learn that OS along with its corresponding patching technique. Likewise, applications acquired from the various app stores are managed with different techniques that must be learned and mastered so that the team can secure the endpoints. Likewise, enterprises are expected to continue relentlessly adopting cloud technologies. By 2020, Gartner forecasts the public cloud services market will reach $383 billion. This includes spending on cloud business process services, cloud application infrastructure services, cloud application services, cloud management and security services, cloud system infrastructure services, and of course, cloud advertising. When a user’s device is lost or stolen, the IT team must be able to track and recover the device or wipe the data if the device isn’t recovered. To maintain the user’s privacy, however, the IT team can not continuously track the location of the user’s device. The flip side of increasing enterprise mobility and cloud usage is the increasing risk to enterprise security. Today, most users have at least two endpoints – a laptop and mobile device – and 80 percent of network devices are be endpoints that are constantly connected to the internet and exposed to its threats such as Meltdown, Spectre, Wannacry, and Petya. Another challenge is managing the endpoints from day one, especially mobile devices. While it’s been relatively easy for IT admins to install agent software on desktops and laptops, smart phones and other mobile devices make life harder for the admins because the devices are rarely if ever connected to the corporate network. Consequently, devices must be provisioned with the BYOD presents another privacy vs security challenge: When users use their own devices for business purposes, privacy needs to be maintained. Photos, contacts, and other personal data should not be September 2019 | 17 www.insightssuccess.com
soon as possible rather wait until after hours or weekends, which can leave systems unnecessarily vulnerable. managed by company’s mobile device management app. On the other hand, security needs to be maintained, too. To that end, the IT team should create a container on the user’s personal device – a secure, managed area that isolates business email, CRM, and other enterprise apps and data from the rest of user’s personal apps/data. Meanwhile, the internet of things (IoT) will introduce many organizations to a new breed of endpoints and connected devices. Unlike their iOS- and Android- powered predecessors, IoT devices will be running many different OSes and applications, all of which may be vulnerable yet must be managed and secured. To establish strong endpoint security and prevent unwanted attacks, IT teams must apply strict security policies on their endpoints. Laptops, for instance, should always run a firewall, prevent the creation of unwanted network shares, and encrypt data via BitLocker or FileVault. Such security policies can protect enterprises from the security risks posed by mobility. Finally, most business applications are moving to the cloud and accessed via browser, effectively making the browser an endpoint. That means to defend against attacks, IT teams need to manage browsers and perform all security operations for them just as if they were desktops, laptops, or any other device. Predicting the development of data and endpoint management As organizations continue to adopt mobility and the cloud, they must also adopt the practices necessary to support this new reality. Data and endpoint security and management are priority one in IT departments. For the vast majority of companies around the world, their future success depends on recognizing and committing to that priority. Going forward, machine learning and AI will help make data and endpoint management a proactive, rather than a reactive process. For instance, these technologies could prevent data theft by detecting anomalies such as unusual login activities or an unusually large number of documents being uploaded to the cloud. They could analyze the root cause of patch deployment failures and suggest fixes. They could also detect system idle times – during lunch hours, for instance – to deploy patches as 18 | September 2019 www.insightssuccess.com

What Drives Customer Experience? Lindsey LeBlanc VP of Strategy Cloud Automation Solutions 28 | September 2019 www.insightssuccess.com
Mentor’s Viewpoint R architect, and software development director walked through the delivery plan of how content would be moved from one automation platform to the new platform. While the major topic was not software integration, the questions continued to arise around integration, APIs, and the interaction of these within the systems. In tech, we all know that integration is at the center of almost any project because so many groups are on disparate technologies and solutions. Teams are sold into multi-year license agreements, managers find their preferential tools, or companies fall into the age-old “it’s the way we’ve always done it” and end up on different solutions or even different versions of software. integration across these solutions becomes an expectation for any customer. When I assess a tool, I automatically look for integrations. Can I connect my CRM to my marketing automation platform? Can I connect my project management tool to my company’s instant messaging? Can I integrate my QA tools with my development solution to speed-up releases? ecently, I sat in a client road map meeting to discuss a major platform migration effort. Their VP of Technology, QA engineer, orchestration As a standard, customers now look for unified systems to accelerate growth and improve business productivity. As competition increases, it becomes paramount to provide a first-class customer experience and satisfy customer expectations from the start. If you are unable to provide integrated software solutions from implementation and quickly resolve issues with hang-ups in systems speaking to each other, customer satisfaction levels drop and the risk of losing the client rises exponentially. It is vital to launch new products, projects, or experiences with the end-user in mind; proper planning of the pain points before launch enables faster revenue for both you and the customer. Both the VP of Technology and the QA engineer brought up the point that multiple groups were using different ticketing, support, development, and project management tools to complete their work across the entire company. None of the technologies talked to each other and most of the teams were based in different regions, effectively siloed from collaboration. A major issue with these disparate solutions is the lack of reporting, which ultimately means a lack of visibility into the system. The VP, Director, and QA engineer are all looking for report-outs of various items— development status, API calls, use percentages, release timelines, or others. How do you know what is functioning well versus what is hanging up in a system? This translates to: how can you determine a successful ROI versus what is ineffective? We know that at the heart of every customer’s end-game is revenue return. By mentioning the variety of software that teams were using, the client was really saying that there was a void in their software solutions. Development is working on deliverables in Jira, QA is testing in Swagger, and management is missing reports of the entire release process. The void is the lack of visibility. While it can be time consuming to develop the target mission and pain points prior to a sales pitch, the comprehensive big-picture ultimately enables you to spend more time on customer acquisition and retention efforts instead of developing or resolving software solutions after the fact. Investments of both time and resources at the start can feel like a burden as it cuts into short-term revenue goals; however, long-term growth evolves from the ability to nurture customer relationships through the understanding of their frustrations and bottom lines. Through understanding the customer’s need for integration first, we enable bigger, faster, and more frequent growth opportunities. If customers demand integrated software solutions outside of the traditional one suite downloads, how can today’s software providers and customized service providers meet this demand and improve the customer experience? Ensuring that your services integrate with a variety of technologies and software solutions have integration points to connect to a multitude of solutions is a great starting point. At our company, we ensure that we stay up-to-speed on changing technologies and market demands to remain agile in the vendor space. Our independence and expertise to many solutions allows us to work across any vertical with any technology to meet any demand. Ultimately, it is not a single IT strategy that drives customer experience, but really the broader business strategy that fosters their experience, long-term loyalty, and complete satisfaction. Traditionally, integrated software solutions are thought to be technologies like Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, AppleWorks, etc. that bring a variety of software tools into a one license, one suite download. As the market changes and companies look at increasing revenue and reducing operations burden, there becomes a need for integration across multiple software solutions that is not as simple as “click and save.” With APIs and the increasing amount of connections that various tools include, September 2019 | 29 www.insightssuccess.com

The Age old Issue of Default Passwords: If you are well versed with IoT, you might know the name of Mirai botnet. This botnet caused few of the largest and most destructive/disruptive DDoS attacks across the globe, and it is one of the best examples of the issue that occur while shipping devices with default passwords and not notifying customers to change them into a more complex one. know IoT devices can expose the IP addresses of its users and can pinpoint the residential address. Later on, this vital information can be sold in the dark- web, jeopardizing personal security. Ÿ Accessing Vehicles: With the growing usage of self- drive cars, a skilled hijacker can get access a smart car through remote access. At the end which can be lethal as anyone can have control over your car and leave you vulnerable to various crimes. Ÿ The one and only reason this attack was so successful, is that Mirai successfully identified those vulnerable IoT devices and used default ids and password to infiltrate and infect them. Ransomware Attacks: Ransomware attacks have recently brought the world of internet to its knees, and IoT devices are not completely protected against those ransomware either. A ransomware attack could potentially disable or limit the functionality of IoT devices and stealing user data at the same time. Ÿ Small Scale Attacks: Back in 2017, another botnet named Reaper came into foray. Reaper was potentially much more dangerous than the famed Mirai mostly due to its small-scale attacks that often evade detection. Ÿ So, at the end all I can say, adopting a multi-layered security while developing IoT devices is essential for security. Also by keeping few basic pointers like using stronger passwords and multi-point security systems one can avert the attack.
