A dentist goes through four years of education and training to be certified as a graduate in dentistry. The course is called DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery). After this, the dentist can if desired, can move up the ladder by taking up any of the following specialties: Orthodontics: Orthodontics, formally known as Orthodontics and dentofacial Orthopedics, is the first branch of dentistry. Orthodontics devotes itself to the study and treatment of improper bites. It involves correcting the teeth that are crooked, spaced, twisted or if there is an improper relation between the upper and the lower dental arches. Oral medicine: It is a branch in dentistry that borders medicine and dentistry. It involves the diagnosis and management of medical conditions associated with the Oral and Maxillofacial region. Prosthodontics: Prosthodontics is also called dental prosthesis or prosthetic dentistry. Prosthetic dentistry deals with the diagnosis, treatment planning and restoration of the oral function, comfort and appearance. It is mainly engaged in restoring missing or deficient teeth. Periodontics: Periodontics also called Periodontology deals with the study and treatment of the supporting structures of the teeth such as periodontist (gums), alveolar bone, cementum and the ligament. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: This internationally recognized branch that involves the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders, injuries and other defects in the hard and soft tissues of the teeth, mouth and other parts in the facial region. A dentist undergoes up to six years of surgical hospital training to be certified in this speciality.
Conservative Dentistry: Conservative Dentistry dedicates itself to the conservation of the teeth. It focuses on rehabilitating the full functionality and appearance of the teeth.
