  2. Visions of the Future: 1954 In 1954, scientists at RAND Corp. built this model of what a home computer might look like in the year 2004!

  3. Flash Drives • Data storage devices • Thumb drives • Flash drives or flash keys • Usb drives or usb keys • Jump drives • Pen drive • Come in various storage sizes—up to 64 gb! • Most common retail sizes are 512mb – 4 gb

  4. iPods, MP 3’s & Media Players • Digital media players: plays music and videos • Common file types: • wma, mp3, wav, aac, jpeg, txt • Plays downloaded music, movies, tv shows, conference sessions, podcasts…

  5. PDA’s • Personal Digital Assistants: • A typical PDA can function as: • web browser, personal organizer, phone book, music/video/ photo player • Most PDA’s can: • Create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files • Can sync with some calendar programs • Can sync with Outlook

  6. Smart Phones • Cell Phones with brains! • Combines a cell phone with a PDA • Standard phone features • Web browsing • Built in cameras • Ability to sync with calendars • Receive and send e-mail

  7. Tablet PC’s • Notebook computers that have a touch screen that allows users to use a stylus or digital pen for input—instead of a keyboard and mouse! • It can read handwriting—yes, even yours! • Very portable, yet expandable with a media dock.

  8. Devices • Hubs • Networking • Usb • Wireless • Bluetooth: • allows devices to talk to each other. • Access points • Needed for wireless networking

  9. Terms • Podcasting • Video or audio feeds that can be downloaded to a computer and can be listened to or watched on a media device—like an iPod. Miss a lecture? Download the session and listen to it on the bus. • Blogs: Short for Web Log. • This is a web page that serves as a publicly accessible journal—usually posted by individuals and updated on a regular basis. • IM me!: Instant messaging • a communication service that allows a chat session to be set up so individuals can “talk” in real time over the internet. • Webinars: Web based seminars • A presentation or seminar that is online. These sessions are interactive, allowing all in attendance to input text and/or audio. • Wikis: • A collaborative web site that allows anyone to edit, delete, or modify content. • www.wikipedia.com--The Free Encyclopedia • www.webopedia.com --online dictionary of tech terms • www.howstuffworks.com – great explanations in easy to understand terms
