Exercise Why we Hold Back Purpose: To identify barriers that keep us from speaking up for safety. • How many of you have ever spoken directly to someone about something they were doing that you knew was unsafe? • What are the reasons we are often reluctant?
Speaking Up for Safety • Right mindset – a conviction that safety is everyone’s responsibility (I am my brother’s keeper.) • The four keys to giving someone safety feedback are: • Stay positive & showconcern • Be clear about the unsafe behavior and its possible consequences • Be specific about the behavior change needed • Ask for a commitment to change • Timely – Wait and you may be TOO LATE! REVIEW Module Review • A culture of safety is what we need • Safety integrated into work (like production & quality) • It’s not just up to management to create this culture • Speak up if you see something unsafe The four keys are: • Stay positive & showconcern for welfare • Be clear about the unsafe behavior/possibleconsequences • Be specific about the behavior change needed • Ask for a commitment to change • When somebody has the courage to speak up, we all need to respect their concern and listen up!
Assignments • Catch someone working safely – Praise them! • Notice an unsafe action – Speak up and give feedback to the other person • Respond non-defensively to someone’s feedback to you
