  5. Exercise Safety Culture Survey Purpose: To identify the current safety culture in your shop/plant. • Complete the assessment honestly • Be prepared to share what you discovered with a partner Safety Culture Assessment

Business Success Production Quality Safety A Culture of Safety • Safety is central to how business is run • Safety ismanaged(just like production and quality) • It’s everyone’s responsibility • Safety is recognized • There is an effort to continually improve safety • Management and employees follow-through

  7. Exercise How YOU Influence Safety Purpose: To brainstorm possible ways that you as an individual might influence safety in your shop. • How might you/do you influence safety? • What can you do to produce a culture of safety?

  8. You Influence Safety When You… • Set the example • Participate in improving safety • Catch others working safely • Coach others when you see unsafe actions

  9. Exercise Why we Hold Back Purpose: To identify barriers that keep us from speaking up for safety. • How many of you have ever spoken directly to someone about something they were doing that you knew was unsafe? • What are the reasons we are often reluctant?

Speaking Up for Safety • Right mindset – a conviction that safety is everyone’s responsibility (I am my brother’s keeper.) • The four keys to giving someone safety feedback are: • Stay positive & showconcern • Be clear about the unsafe behavior and its possible consequences • Be specific about the behavior change needed • Ask for a commitment to change • Timely – Wait and you may be TOO LATE! Exercise Speaking Up – Role Play Purpose: To practice applying the four keys when speaking up for safety. • Form partners: “Partner A” and “Partner B” • You will take turns responding to several unsafe situations • After viewing each situation, respond as if you had just observed this. What would you say to speak up for safety?

REVIEW Module Review • A culture of safety is what we need • Safety integrated into work (like production & quality) • It’s not just up to management to create this culture • Speak up if you see something unsafe The four keys are: • Stay positive & showconcern for welfare • Be clear about the unsafe behavior/possibleconsequences • Be specific about the behavior change needed • Ask for a commitment to change • When somebody has the courage to speak up, we all need to respect their concern and listen up!
