3. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
4. Getting started First, read the web resources we have provided for you on ireflect.org about ways of creating more meaningful pictures
Some tutors recommend keeping an electronic or paper-based journal to remind you of any skills, tools, resources or encounters that challenged you and the way you dealt with that challenge, issue or event. This will also help you to remember your experiences and to articulate and transform them into images and narrative
Using either a digital camera or a mobile phone camera take as many pictures as you can that incorporate or express
How you experienced a particular situation
How you about the way you dealt with an issue, new piece of knowledge or situation, or a joyful event or moment in your module, course work, or placement
What you learnt from an encounter or resolving a problem
How an event, thought, or action changed or challenged the way you thought
What you would change and why
Remember: Your reflective digital story is about your experiences and your learning process, if you use someone else’s photographs you will diminish the power of your story and your ability to convey the extent of your learning process. This is why we urge you not to use pictures and photographs from the Internet
Remember: Give yourself the same time to create your reflective digital story as you would an essay, that way you will have time to experiment and play with your photographs and created images. You will also have time, if you so wish, to go back and edit or even recreate images which better fit your theme
Once you have collected your photographs you can transfer them directly from your camera to a cluster computer or your own laptop or computer. Photo Story 3 will not work on a Mac unless it has a split drive. You can transfer any digital photographs using a scanner by using Windows XP.2.
5. Creating more meaningful photographs, part one
Rather than using a picture of a question mark to show your surprise or puzzlement at learning something new, challenging or difficult, think about how you felt at that time. Did you feel
Bewildered?
Afraid?
Inadequate?
Disheartened?
Angry?
Overwhelmed?
Relieved?
How would you relate these emotions into your photograph?
Could you use colour to help convey your feelings? If you blanched your
photograph in white light, obscuring and blurring the sharp edges of your chosen
objects in your photograph would this help to convey an overwhelming sense of
shock?
6. Creating more meaningful photographs, part two IF YOU FELT CONFIDENT, RELAXED OR AT EASE ABOUT A FORTHCOMING PRESENTATION, PATIENT VISIT OR PERFORMANCE FOR EXAMPLE YOU MIGHT USE AN IMAGE LIKE THIS:
HOWEVER, THERE ARE OTHER MORE MEANINGFUL IMAGES THAT YOU COULD USE …
TRY EXPERIMENTING WITH ITEMS FROM NATURE TO CONVEY A FEELING OF CONTENTMENT, REFLECTION OR CONFIDENCE. YOU COULD CREATE A PHOTOGRAPH WITH STONES THAT YOU HAVE PLACED OVER A GRASSY OR SANDY AREA OR LEAVES FLOATING ON WATER. THIS CAN EASILY BE DONE IN A BOWL IF YOU DON’T LIVE NEAR A BEACH. THE TEXTURE OF THE BOWL CAN HELP CHANGE THE MOOD OF YOUR PICTURE; A STONE BOWL CAN APPEAR TO BE STRUCTURED AND CONTAINED, A WOODEN BOWL IS MORE NATURAL AND SOOTHING, A PORCELAIN BOWL CAN BE MORE FORMAL, ELEGANT, PROFESSIONAL OR QUALIFIED
7. Creating your photo story using PS3 BEFORE USING PS3, GO THROUGH YOUR COLLECTION OF
IMAGES. THINK ABOUT WHICH OF YOUR IMAGES BEST
REFLECT YOUR
THOUGHTS, EXPECTATIONS AND FEELINGS BEFORE AND AFTER
YOUR PRESENTATION, PERFORMANCE, PATIENT VISIT OR WORK
PLACEMENT
DECISIONS YOU MADE AND WHY
WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT THROUGH YOUR JOURNEY
IF YOU ARE USING PHOTO STORY 3 TO CREATE YOUR REFLECTIVE
DIGITAL STORY THEN REMEMBER TO SAVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS TO
MY PICTURES OR CREATE A SEPARATE FILE IN MY DOCUMENTS
8. IMPORTING PICTURES
Open Photo Story 3 and go to the ‘Welcome to Photo Story 3 for Windows’ page. Tick the check box ‘Begin a new story’ then click on ‘Next’
Click on ‘Import Picture’. This will bring up a new window that gives you access to your files in My Documents. If you have saved your photographs to My Pictures then click on that file. If you want to transfer more than one image to your Photo Story 3 storyboard then keep your finger pressed down on the Control button and use your mouse pointer to highlight all the photographs you want to select. At this point if you wish to change the order of the photographs or delete any, you can do so by using your mouse pointer to click and move the image. When you are satisfied with your choice click the ‘Next’ button
9. ADDING EFFECTS Look at your storyboard and highlight the thumbnail of your chosen picture
Click on your chosen effect
If you wish to create a title or add text then type it in the right hand box. Remember that as you type, your text will appear over your picture so that you will have an idea of your finished picture
Go through your pictures placing effects as you wish. Remember only to use effects when you believe that they will enhance a point that you are making. Too many effects can confuse or even bewilder your audience
When you are satisfied that your pictures are effective then click on the next button
10. Preview If you want to review your story so far click on the preview button. This will bring up a Photo Story 3 Windows Preview box and here you can watch your story so far…

If you wish to create your own music then choose the Create Music button and follow the instructions
Before you automatically add background music ask yourself what is its purpose? Do you, for example, want to alert your viewer to a discordant emotion or thought? Or do you want to highlight a moment of enlightenment or tension?
However you decide to use music please be aware of copy write. Do not use any piece of music without the composers permission. If you or any of your friends are musically orientated why not create a piece of music tailored for your story?
Use the Preview button at any point to review your story so far
