This important concept describes our “awareness of the relationship between an individual and the wider society” so that we can interpret individual behavior in the context of society’s issues and concerns. Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: How does your pursuit of a college education affect society and your place in society? What are the social effects of your decision to become a student, both now and after graduation for you personally and for your community?

SOC 262 education changes / tutorialrank.com SOC 262 Week 2 Discussion http://www.tutorialrank.com/SOC/SOC-262/product-27853-SOC-262-Week-2-Discussion In this week’s reading, Schaefer (2019, p. 79) defines a group as “people with similar norms, values, and expectations who interact with one another on a regular basis.” Groups may be formal or informal, and the individuals who self-identify as part of a group often have statuses and roles related to membership in that group. Additionally, a person often belongs to many groups simultaneously. As a result, each of us has multiple dimensions of identity related to the diverse collection of statuses and roles that shape our daily interactions with others.

Use this week’s reading and discussions and your personal experiences to inform your answers. Consider the theme of the Sociology Matters prompt at the end of Ch. 4 (p. 122): Sociology matters because it explains why you accept certain social norms almost without thinking—and why you pay a price if you break those norms.

SOC 262 education changes / tutorialrank.com SOC 262 Week 3 Discussion http://www.tutorialrank.com/SOC/SOC-262/product-27855-SOC-262-Week-3-Discussion This week we explore the concepts of ethnicity, race, and gender. All people residing in the United States are either Native Americans, immigrants, descendants of immigrants, descendants of slaves, or a combination of these. Looking closely at your own family’s stories can help you to understand immigration, ethnicity, and race in the United States better.

Use this week’s reading and discussions and your personal experiences to inform your answers.  Consider the two themes of the Sociology Matters box at the end of Ch. 6 (p. 184): Sociology matters because it makes us think about why some people in our society are treated better than others and because it makes us more aware of prejudice and discrimination against members of certain racial and ethnic groups.

  9. SOC 262 education changes / tutorialrank.com SOC 262 Week 4 Discussion http://www.tutorialrank.com/SOC/SOC-262/product-27857-SOC-262-Week-4-Discussion Sociologists define social institutions as “organized patterns of beliefs and behavior that are centered on basic social needs” (Schaefer 2019, p. 206). This week’s readings look in detail at five social institutions: family, religion, government, the education system, and the economic system. From the functionalist perspective, social institutions provide customs and ideas to meet society’s needs to replace its members, teach its members cultural norms, values, knowledge, and skills, provision it members with goods and services, maintain social control and order, and “provide and maintain a sense of purpose” (Schaefer 2019, p. 207). From a conflict perspective social institutions preserve the social status quo of roles, statuses, privileges.
