ArtStreet An overview of the design, vision and strategy for a new form of integrated student learning & living in a residential campus setting. September 2002
The Arts: Vision & Purpose • An “Arts Strategy” for the College • Excellent faculty, strong majors and programs in the arts • The arts will make a significant and sustainable contribution to the liberal learning foundation of all students • Planning and fundraising has begun for a comprehensive, central visual and performing arts facility on campus that will support the academic programs in the arts. • The “Learning Living Arts Center,” known as ArtStreet will introduce new opportunities for learning, creative exploration and community building in the student neighborhood.
From LLAC to ArtStreetTimeline • 1997 First proposal for the “Learning Living Arts Center” • 1998 Gift from Kettering Family Foundation for $5 Million • 1999 Planning teams from the College formed – Led by then Associate Dean Pestello • 2000 - 2002 Campus-wide planning and design team (Arts Faculty, Students, Campus Ministry, Student Development, Architects from two firms, Associate Provosts and Facilities Management) • 2003 (July) Groundbreaking (Ceremonial groundbreaking to be held in April 2003) • 2005 (August) Opening • Total project cost for Phase 1 - $9 Million

Project Vision • ArtStreetshall be a vital, dynamic and compelling learning and living environment in the student neighborhood. The Arts will be the vehicle to promote, foster and encourage new ways of engaging learners by providing a stimulating and heightened interest in culture and creativity as part of everyday life.
ArtStreet connects learning and living with a focus upon the arts. • It will be a model and testing place for learner-centered living as found in the University’s vision for transformation of the culture and physical arrangement of the South Student Neighborhood. • The residential scale and character of the neighborhood is to be preserved and used as a rich source of design inspiration for center.
ArtStreet as the New Urbanism* • Gathering Center for the Neighborhood • Café, Radio Station, Music Practice Spaces, Recording Studio, Visual Arts Studio, Social and meeting Spaces, • Townhouses for 56 students with traditional porches. (Phase 1)*For more on “new urbanism” visit these links:http://www.newurbanism.orghttp://bradley.bradley.edu/~ajh/nu.htm
ArtStreet is Unlike Any Other “Learning & Living” Project • Most others are created around a residence hall. • Add “learning” through classrooms in the building. • Most Living-learning centers are defined by “cohorting” – Put all the math majors on floor 6. • ArtStreet is not just for Artists…It’s a place for all students in the neighborhood.
“Programming” ArtStreet • Performance Spaces for Classes, Groups, Workshops • Gallery Space for Visual Arts • The ArtStreet Nickleodeon • a small, high quality video & multimedia presentation space • Practice Spaces, Collaboration Spaces, Social Spaces • The ArtStreet Amphitheatre • WGXM-FM (50 watt student radio station) • Multipurpose Recording Studio and Workshop Building
