The History of the Tuskegee Airmen In 1972, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. was formed to inspire youth in the field of aviation and aerospace technology and preserve the history and accomplishments of these “Living Legends”. To date, there are over 45 chapters within the United States and Canada, which include more than 200 original Tuskegee Airmen. In 1978, the Tuskegee Airmen established the Tuskegee Airmen National Scholarship Foundation (NSF) with an initial goal of $1 million dollars. Seed money came from pledges, contributions and the proceeds of a Memorial Banquet honoring General Daniel “Chappie” James, Jr. The goal was achieved in 1997 and in 2000 the fund balance reached $1,700,000.00. Each year the NSF grants over 40 scholarships in the amount of $1,500., to deserving high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in aviation, aeronautics and aerospace technology. The Annual Tuskegee Airmen Golf Classic has become a key vehicle to raise needed funds to ensure financial support is available to those with a committed interest in aviation. We strongly believe by partnering with TAI, together we will advance three worthy causes: promote African-American History, recognize the sacrifices of all Armed Service members and inspire youth to overcome the odds they face by illuminating the history and astonishing accomplishments of the most heroic and historic African-American Military Aviation pioneers of our time. Tuskegee Airmen During World War II, a group of young African Americans, overcoming great obstacles, became members of one of the most prestigious flying fighter and bomber units in the history of the Army Air Corp. Their courage and valor was so renowned that white pilots and servicemen specifically requested them as escorts on some of their most dangerous missions. Many lost their lives and some became Prisoners of War. The World Renowned “Tuskegee Airmen” are America’s first black military pilots, bombardiers, navigators and support personnel trained during World War II. Known also as “The Red Tails” the fighter pilots, of the 99th Fighter Squadron and the 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps, led by Colonel Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., distinguished themselves in combat flying numerous missions in the European theater from 1944 through 1946. These American Heroes successfully fought two wars; a battle against enemy attack overseas and a battle at home to integrate the Armed Forces. Clearly the Airmen’s heroic, successful and persistent fight pioneered Civil Rights before the Civil Rights Movement ignited in the mid 1950s. Dallas/Ft Worth, TX, is the site of the 36th Annual Tuskegee Airmen National Convention. This may be the last opportunity we as a nation will have to pay homage and show our gratitude and respect to many of those who served this country so valiantly. On March 29, 2007, these brave soldiers will receive the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal of Honor for the sacrifices and accomplishments made during WWII and paving the way for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s.
