  1. How to fix H101, H202, H303 or H505 and other Multi User setup problems inQuickBooks There are several recommended solutions to resolve these errors. The first solution may solve the problem or you may need to try them all to resolve the issue. For best results, perform thesolutions in the ordershown. • QuickBooks Desktop is trying to establish a connection to the company file and can'tcommunicate with the server (computer hosting the QuickBooksfiles). • Several issues can cause thefollowing: • Hosting configuration settings are incorrect - Another computer might have hostingturned on. Only the server (where the file is saved) should have hosting turnedon. • QB firewall ports are not set properly - Firewall is blocking incoming/outgoingcommunication to the company file. The .ND file is damaged or incorrect - The .ND file is a configuration file that allows QuickBooks to access a company file in a network. A damaged .ND file may prevent QuickBooks Desktop from accessing files over thenetwork. • QuickBooks can't obtain the IP address of the host computer - QuickBooks DatabaseServer Manager might be using a different/bad IPaddress. • DNS settings are incorrect - Workstations are configured to open the file through thehosts’ Full Qualified Domain Name (ex.computername.domain.com).

  2. QuickBooks services are not started - QuickBooksDBXX or QBCFMonitor services arenot running and should be startedautomatically. • Solution 1: Download and use the QuickBooks FileDoctor • Download and run the QuickBooks File Doctor on the server and any workstation gettingan H-series error. QuickBooks File Doctor will attempt to automatically resolve the multi-usererror. • Solution 2 : Check hosting andservices • In a multi-user environment, hosting should only be enabled on the hosting computer(server). • VerifyHosting • On each workstation (not the server or hosting computer), open QuickBooks and chooseFile • >Utilities. • If you see Host Multi-User Access on the list, this computer is not hosting the companyfile and you can go to the nextcomputer. • Note: Don't change anything if you see Host Multi User Access at yourworkstation. • If you see Stop Hosting Multi-User Access, select thatoption. • Repeat steps 1-3 on eachcomputer. • Verify QuickBooksservices • When working with QuickBooks Desktop in a multi-user mode, QuickBooks services (QuickbooksDBXX and QBCFMonitorService) need to be running on the servercomputer. • Press the Windows key + R to bring up the runbox. • Type services.msc and pressEnter. • In the services window, scroll down and look for the QuickBooksDBXXservice. • Note: XX represents the year of QuickBooks Desktop you aretroubleshooting. • If you do not see the QuickBooksDBXXservice: • If you only use the Database Server Manager (the entire program itself is not runon the server) make sure that the Database Server Manager is installed on theserver. • Note: Each year of QuickBooks Desktop you have on the workstations will needto have its Database Server Manager installed to use multi-usermode. • If you run the entire program on the server, open QuickBooks, go to File > Utilities and make sure hosting is enabled (it should say Stop Hosting Multi User access. Ifit says Host Multi User mode, click it to enable hosting on theserver). • Double-click the QuickBooksDBXX service and make sure the Startup Type is set to Automaticand service status is Running orStarted.

  3. Click the Recoverytab. • Click the drop-down menu for First failure and select Restart the Service. This will automatically restart the QuickBooksDB service if it fails. Do the same for Second failureand Subsequentfailures. • Click OK to save thechanges. • Repeat steps 1-6 above for theQBCFMonitorService. • Open QuickBooks in multi-user mode on each affected workstation. If the issue persists, try to make sure the QuickBooksDBXX service is a member of the administrator group andhas the appropriate permissions. See Set Windows access permissions to share company files toverify. • For Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2users • Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 requires that programs be authenticated every time the system boots up. QuickBooks will not pass this authentication. When using that system as a QuickBooksfile server, a few steps need to be taken after every reboot or an H202 error willoccur. • The following steps should only be done when running Windows 2012 ServerEssentials • Stop the Base Filtering EngineService. • On your keyboard, press Windows + R to open the Runwindow. • In the open field, enter services.msc and pressEnter. • Right-click the Base Filtering EngineService. • Choose Stop. (If an error occurs, dismiss the error and stop the serviceagain) • Scan the QuickBooks File Directory with the QuickBooks Database ServerManager. • Start > All Programs > QuickBooks > QuickBooks Database ServerManager • Click the Scan folderstab.

  4. Click Add folder (if no folders are present). Otherwise, highlight the folder withthe files and clickScan. • When the process is complete, close the Database ServerManager. • Start the Base Filtering EngineService. • On your keyboard, press Windows + R to open the Runwindow. • In the open field, enter services.msc and pressEnter. • Right-click the Base Filtering EngineService. • Choose Start. (If an error occurs, dismiss the error and stop the serviceagain) • If this did not resolve your issue, follow the steps in the Multi-User access changesin QuickBooks 2015 and later (how to enable alternate setup/NAS drive)article. • Important: The Base Filtering Engine Service (BFE) service controls the operation of the Windows Filtering Platform. This service is essential for operation of many firewall products. Please ensurethe Windows Firewall is "started" after the BFE services arere-enabled. • Return toServices: • Press the Windows key + R to open the Runwindow. • In the Open: field, type services.msc and pressEnter. • In the Services window, scroll down to the service for WindowsFirewall. • Double click WindowsFirewall. • If Windows Firewall is not running, clickStart. • Solution 3: Open the network ports QuickBooks uses to transmitdata • IMPORTANT (Windows 8) and AVG Antivirus 2013 users: In depth research by our engineering team has determined that a conflict exists between QuickBooks and AVG AntiVirus 2013 on Windows 8. The conflict has been isolated to AVG, and if you are using AVG AntiVirus 2013 orAVG Antivirus 2013 Free on Windows 8 and have an H202 error, you will need to uninstall the AVG program and enable Windows Defender (built into Windows 8). You will need to contact AVG supportif you have any questions or wish to keep the AVG 2013software. • ConfigureFirewall • Perform the following on eachcomputer. • Access Windows FirewallSettings. • From the Desktop, right-click the Windows logo and select ControlPanel. • Type "Firewall" in the search bar and pressEnter. • Click Windows Firewall and select Advancedsettings. • On the left, right-click Outbound Rules, and choose NewRule. • Choose Ports and clickNext.

  5. Select TCP and in the specific local ports box, enter in the followingports: • QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728,55378-55382 • QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727,55373-55377 • QuickBooks Desktop 2016: 8019, 56726,55368-55372 • QuickBooks Desktop 2015: 8019, 56725,55363-55367 • Click Next and select Allow theConnection. • Click Next to enter a name in the name field (for example, "QuickBooks ports" ) andclick Finish. • Repeat steps 1-5 for the InboundRules. • Open QuickBooks in multi-user modeagain. • If you have a third party antivirus/firewall program, you may need to configure any other firewall or antivirussoftware. • For a temporary solution, you may disable the anti-virus/firewall program to identify it as a problem and make sure to re-enable it when you're done with the test. If the error persists, continue to step 3 (Ping the ServerComputer). • Check UNC vc. Mapped Drive (file pathtroubleshooting) • Important:These steps are highly technical in nature and may be best performed by a qualifiedIT professional present. The scope of this test is to see if QuickBooks can reach the server fromthe workstation(s). • Before you start, please ensure thefollowing: • Network Discovery is TurnedOn • 1. Open Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click WindowsFirewall.

  6. In the left pane, click Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall (if you arerunning Windows Server2012). • Click ChangeSettings. • Select Network Discovery, and then clickOK. • You know the name of yourserver • Press the Windows Key + R to open a run command and type CMD and pressthe Enterkey. • Enter ipconfig /all, and press the Enterkey. • Under the IP Configuration section, find the line "HostName". • The name on its right is your servername. • Take note of the name and proceed to the nextstep. • Press Windows Key + R to open a Runcommand. • Enter ping [servername] and press Enter. You should see a reply for each packet withnone beinglost. Important: If you see packet loss or a slow reply, your network should be diagnosed bya qualified ITprofessional. If using a mapped drive to connect to your company file on the server, bypass the mapped drive by navigating to the server shared folder via UNC (Universal Naming Convention)path from the workstation computer (ex:\\server\QBData\). If the path to your company file is on your network and begins with a drive letter, it'sa mappeddrive. Use the UNC path, found in the title bar, to navigate to your company file withinQuickBooks. Solution 4: Add your server to the Windows hostsfile It may be necessary to Edit Windows hostsfile. Solution 5: Create a new folder for your companyfile On the hosting computer, create a new folder, share it and Set Windows accesspermissions to share companyfiles. Note: If you do not have access to the file server, contact your ITprofessional. Copy the .qbw file to the newfolder. Open your company file in multi-user modeagain.
